DebEX Gnome Live System with Gnome DE 46, Refracta Snapshot, Calamares and kernel 6.9.0-rc5-amd64-exton :: Build 240426

About DebEX Gnome Build 240426
I have made a new extra version of DebEX, which I call DebEX Gnome Live System. It’s a pure Debian system using the testing (Trixie) and unstable (Sid) repositoriesGnome 46 is used as Desktop Environment. I have removed the Mate Desktop, since Gnome now can be used on all kind of computers. Also when running DebEX Gnome in VirtualBox and VMware. No need for Nvidia’s proprietary graphics drivers when running this new version of DebEX. You can of course install such drivers if you want to. Furthermore I have replaced Google Chrome with Firefox ESR. It is now possible to watch Netflix movies using Firefox ESR in Linux. I have also replaced Refracta Installer with Calamares Installer, which makes it possible to install DebEX Gnome in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. All installed packages have been updated to the latest versions as of 240426.

Kernel
DebEX Gnome uses kernel 6.9.0-rc5-amd64-exton.

Note1
: Refracta Installer is not really “replaced” by Calamares. You should use Refracta Installer in VirtualBox/VMware. If you do you don’t have to chroot to be able to install Grub.
Note2VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed, which means that you can run DebEX Gnome in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot…

SCREENSHOTS
1. Calamares Installer is running
2. Chroot in VirtualBox (to install Grub)
3. Refracta Snapshot is running
4. The Desktop for root
5. The Desktop for the ordinary user user
6. Netflix is running in Firefox
7. Showing a WiFi connection

DebEX Gnome/Enlightenment – Build 230411 – with Gnome 43.4, Enlightenment 0.25.4, penguins-eggs (a remaster tool), Refracta Snapshot and kernel 6.3.0-rc4-amd64-exton

NEWS 230411 ABOUT DebEX Gnome/Enlightenment
This DebEX version replaces version 211215, which also had the Budgie Desktop as DE. However Budgie seems incompatible with Debian 12 (Sid) right now, so I had to remove it.

Debian 12 (Sid/upcoming Bookworm) is still supposed to be unstable, but the “full hard freeze” took place already 230312.

So this new version of DebEX is based on Debian Sid (unstable) with Gnome 43.4, Enlightenment 0.25.4 and kernel 6.3.0-rc4-amd64-exton. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of April 11, 2023.

ABOUT penguins-eggs
My other DebEX builds are created with Refracta Snapshot. So is the new DebEX version of 230411. But it is also possible to create a new DebEX (Debian 12) system with a remaster tool called penguins-eggs, which is pre-installed in version 230411. Very easy to handle. Penguins-eggs is a console utility, in active development, who let you to remaster your system and redistribute it as iso images or from the lan via PXE remote boot. Penguins-eggs is developed by Piero Proietti. It is based on Remastersys, Refracta, Systemback and father Knoppix.

How-to use penguins-eggs
1. Install DebEX (or any other Debian/Ubuntu based system) to hard drive
2. Change everything to your liking
3. Open up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c
Screenshot 1NOTE: If you choose fast your new ISO will be ready in about five minutes (even in VirtualBox). If you choose max it will take about two hours (in VirtualBox), but the ISO will be about 500 MB smaller.. A smaller ISO has one disadvantage. It doesn’t boot as fast as the one built using the option fast.

DebEX KDE Plasma, Build 230330, based on Debian 12 Sid/Bookworm with kernel 6.1.12-exton and Refracta Snapshot

NEWS 230330 about DebEX KDE Plasma – a Refracta Build
I have made a new version of DebEX KDE Plasma Live DVD – uefi. It’s a pure Debian 12 (Sid/upcoming Bookworm) system. Still supposed to be unstable, but the “full hard freeze” took place already 230312. And I haven’t discovered any “bugs”… There are no Ubuntu or Kubuntu elements involved in DebEX. DebEX KDE Plasma Sid uses the KDE Plasma Desktop 5.27.2 – latest version, released 230228 – as Desktop environment. Kernel 6.1.12-exton is used. Compiled with all Debian patches. All included packages have been updated to the latest version as of 230330. In Build 230330 I have added LURE (Linux User REpository). LURE is intended to bring the AUR to all distros. It is currently in an alpha state and may not be stable. It can download a repository, build packages in it using a bash script similar to PKGBUILD, and then install them using your system package manager. Read about how to use LURE…

VirtualBox Guest Additions and VMware Tools are pre-installed, which mean that you can run DebEX KDE in full screen – see the screenshots below.

THE REAL McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian and (mostly) of Debian Sid/unstable. So is DebEX KDE.

SCREENSHOTS
1. Using LURE to install Thunar
2. The Desktop for the ordinary user user
3. The Desktop for root
4. Running in full screen in VirtualBox

DebEX KDE Plasma, Build 220929, with kernel 6.0.0-rc6-exton and Refracta Snapshot

NEWS 220929 about DebEX KDE Plasma – a Refracta Build
I have made a new version of DebEX KDE Plasma Live DVDefi. It replaces version 211023. It’s a pure Debian 11 system. (Stable). I.e.: There are no Ubuntu or Kubuntu elements involved. DebEX KDE Plasma uses the KDE Plasma Desktop 5.20.5 as Desktop environment. Kernel 6.0.0-rc6-exton is used. I have replaced Wicd with NetworkManager. It works better. I have replaced Google Chrome with Firefox-ESR/Iceweasel 102.3 (for Netflix). I’ve also added SMPlayer – an alternative to Vlc. (SMPlayer is a free media player for Windows and Linux with built-in codecs that can play virtually all video and audio formats. It doesn’t need any external codecs. Just install SMPlayer and you’ll be able to play all formats without the hassle to find and install codec packs). All other installed packages have also been updated to the latest version of 220929. Study the full package list.

MOST IMPORTANT CHANGES
A) I’ve installed the full KDE Plasma Desktop using the command sudo apt install task-kde-desktop. In order to save space I have removed LibreOffice with the command sudo apt remove libreoffice*
B) I have added Calamares 3.2.36.1 Installer Framework. Now you can choose language when the installation starts. When it’s ready everything will be in your chosen language! You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers if you follow my INSTRUCTION for non-efi computers. Or don’t do that. Just start Calamares and choose to install Grub in MBR. It works very well!
NOTE: You can also use Refracta Installer. Preferably in VirtualBox/VMware. NOTE ALSO: When running DebEX KDE in VirtualBox you can do it in full screen since VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot.

THE REAL McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian. So is DebEX.

About DebEX Barebone Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment, DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE Plasma Linux 64 bit
All three systems/distributions are based on Debian. Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40 and Enlightenment 0.24.2 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment Build 211215. Gnome 3.38 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE Plasma Desktop 5:20 is used in DebEX KDE. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

NEWS 211215 about DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment – a penguins-eggs Build
A new version of DebEX – based on Debian Sid (unstable) – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40, Enlightenment 0.24.2 and kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21 is ready. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of December 15, 2021.

Most important Changes
When you start up DebEX Build 211215 live (from a DVD or a USB stick) you will end up logged in as the ordinary user user to the Budgie Desktop. The password for user is live. You can log out from Budgie and log in again to Gnome or Enlightenment. You can also log in from LightDM as root (super admin). The password for root is root. NOTE: You can’t log in to the Enlightenment Desktop when running DebEX Build 211215 in VirtualBox or VMware. You can use the Calamares 3.2.48-1 Installer Framework to install DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment to your computer in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. Watch this animated GIF. My other DebEX builds were created with Refracta Snapshot. This DebEX Build (211215) is, however, created with a remaster tool called penguins-eggs. Very easy to handle. Penguins-eggs is a console utility, in active development, who let you to remaster your system and redistribute it as iso images or from the lan via PXE remote boot. You can use penguins-eggs in any Debian/Ubuntu system installed to hard drive. Basically you only need to start up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c. Then just follow the instructions – see the screenshots below. If you haven’t installed Calamares you will be asked to do so. Do that even if you already have Calamares installed. A system/ISO built with penguins-eggs must use a special Calamares version to be installable.

DebEX Gnome with Gnome 3.38, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.12.8-exton – Build 210603

About DebEX Gnome Build 210603
I have made a new extra version of DebEX, which I call DebEX Gnome Live DVD. It’s a pure Debian system using the testing (bullseye) and unstable (sid) repositories. Gnome 3.38 is used as Desktop environment. GNOME 40 (latest) is not yet in Debian’s repositories. If you want to try out GNOME 40 you’ll have to run Fedora or Arch Linux. You can also run GNOME 40 in ArchEX (Arch Linux live) Build 210526.

More about DebEX Gnome
I have removed the Mate Desktop, since Gnome now can be used on all kind of computers. Also when running DebEX in VirtualBox and VMware. All installed packages have been updated to the latest version as of 210603. DebEX Gnome uses kernel 5.12.8-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s second latest kernel 5.12.8.

THE REAL McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian. So is DebEX.

Rolling distribution
Debian/DebEX are rolling distributions, which implies that once you have installed the system on the hard drive there is no need for re-installations (which otherwise is common in the Linux world).

DebEX KDE/Plasma Build 210216 :: Create your own Debian “Bullseye” system in less than 10 min :: So easy that a ten year old child can do it!

NEWS 210216 about DebEX KDE Plasma – a Refracta Build
I have made a new version of DebEX KDE Plasma Live DVDefi. It replaces version 200228. It’s a pure Debian system. (Unstable/Experimental). I.e.: There are no Ubuntu or Kubuntu elements involved. DebEX KDE Plasma uses the KDE Plasma Desktop 5:20 as Desktop environment.

Kernel 5.11.0-exton is used. (Kernel 5.11 was released by Kernel.org 210214). I have replaced Wicd with NetworkManager. It works better. I have replaced Google Chrome with Iceweasel (Firefox) 52.9 (for Netflix). All other installed packages have also been updated to the latest version of 210216. Study the full packages list.

What’s new in kernel 5.11?

MOST IMPORTANT CHANGES
I have added Calamares 3.2.35.1-1 Installer Framework. Now you can choose language when the installation starts. When it’s ready everything will be in your chosen language! You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers if you follow my INSTRUCTION for non-efi computers. NOTE: You can also use Refracta Installer. Preferably in VirtualBox/VMware. NOTE ALSO: When running DebEX KDE in VirtualBox you can do it in full screen since VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot.  You can also run DebEX KDE in full screen in VMware since VMware Tools are pre-installed. It is a bit of a hassle to install VMware Tools so I did it for you in Build 210216. Watch this screenshot.

Important about Refracta

You can use the Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed in all four versions of DebEX) to create your own installable Debian Live DVD once you have installed DebEX to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Debian live system. When you start Refracta Snapshot it will look like this. You don’t even have to install DebEX to hard drive before you can use the Refracta Snapshot. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Debian system while running DebEX from a DVD or a USB stick. On one of my computers with 32GB RAM the Refracta process was done in 10 minutes! So please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO) will only take 10 – 50 min! (Depending on how fast your computer is). You’ll find the (new) ISO in /home/snapshot.

THE REAL McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian. So is DebEX.

DebEX Gnome – 64 bit – for UEFI computers with Gnome Desktop 3.38 (latest), Calamares Installer, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.9.1-exton (latest) – Build 201018

NEWS 201018 about DebEX Gnome – a Refracta UEFI Build
I have made a new extra version of DebEX, which I call DebEX Gnome Live DVD. It’s a pure Debian system using the testing (bullseye) and unstable (sid) repositories. Gnome 3.38 (latest) is used as Desktop environment. I have removed the Mate Desktop, since Gnome now can be used on all kind of computers. Also when running DebEX in VirtualBox and VMware. I have also replaced Refracta Installer with Calamares Installer, which makes it possible to install DebEX Gnome in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. All installed packages have been updated to the latest version as of 201018. DebEX Gnome uses kernel 5.9.1-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s latest kernel 5.91 released yesterday (201017).

About all DebEX systems

All four DebEX systems/distributions are a based on Debian Buster (10) and
Debian Bullseye/Sid (upcoming Debian 11). Budgie Desktop 10.5 and Enlightenment 0.23.1 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Barebone/Budgie/Enlightenment. Gnome 3.38 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE Plasma Desktop 5:14 is used in DebEX KDE. LXQt is used in DebEX Build 19120932 bit. The system language is English (in all four versions of DebEX).

Running DebEX Gnome in VirtualBox
VirtualBox Guest Utils can be installed without problems – screenshot. Which means that you can run DebEX in VirtualBox using the whole screen – screenshot. Another good thing with version 201018 of DebEX Gnome is that it can be installed without problems in VirtualBox. I.e. you don’t have to chroot into the install partition and install Grub – screenshot.

Software management
DebEX (all three versions) uses Apt (apt-get) and Synaptic. I have also installed Pacapt (an Arch’s pacman-like package manager) in DebEX Gnome. It works extremely well. Available commands: pacapt -h. For example: pacapt -S libreoffice installs LibreOffice. In DebEX Gnome you can also use the Cactus Package Manager. Example commands: cpm i mousepad and cpm s gimp. (Install Mousepad and search for Gimp). CPM works very well.

THE REAL McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian. So is DebEX.

DebEX Budgie/Enlightenment – Build 200618 – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Enlightenment 0.23.1, Refracta Snapshot, Nvidia Graphics driver 440.82 and kernel 5.7.2-exton

About DebEX Barebone Budgie/Enlightenment, DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE Plasma Linux 64 bit
All three systems/distributions are a based on Debian Buster (10) and Debian Bullseye/Sid (upcoming Debian 11). Budgie Desktop 10.5 and Enlightenment 0.23.1 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Barebone/Budgie/Enlightenment. Gnome 3.30 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE Plasma Desktop 5:14 is used in DebEX KDE. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

NEWS 200618 about DebEX Budgie/Enlightenment – a Refracta Build
A new version of DebEX Barebone with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Enlightenment 0.23.1 and kernel 5.7.2-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s second latest kernel 5.7.2) is ready. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of June 18, 2020. DebEX Barebone is now based on Debian Buster (Debian 10.4). I have installed Nvidia‘s latest proprietary Graphics driver 440.82. It will automatically be used if your computer has support for it.

Most important Changes
I’ve added Enlightenment 0.23.1 as an extra Desktop environment. That makes this version of DebEX unique, since there is no other live distro with Enlightenment 0.23.1 installed. Version 0.23.1 (released 190926) is not yet included in Debian’s repositories. I’ve thus installed Enlightenment 0.23.1 from source. The ISO is of only 1520 MB, which makes it easy to run the system live from RAM. That ability allows DebEX Budgie/Enlightenment to be very fast, since reading and writing data from/to RAM is much faster than on a hard disk drive. You can use the Calamares 3.2.4-3 Installer Framework to install DebEX Budgie/Enlightenment to your computer in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. Watch this animated GIF. NOTE also: When starting up DebEX Budgie/Enlightenment and entering the Enlightenment 0.23.1 Desktop you will get an error message as this screenshot shows. The error is fixed by running the following commands: chmod 777 .cache/efreet and sudo chmod 777 /root/.cache/efreet. After installing DebEX to hard drive you won’t get any error messages.
