RLRH EXTON Linux Live System compatible with Rocky Linux 9.2 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux® :: Build 230922

ABOUT RLRH EXTON Build 230922
RLRH EXTON is a LIVE version of Rocky Linux 9.2 which is also compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux®. Rocky Linux is an open-source enterprise operating system designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux®. It is under intensive development by the community.

LIVE LINUX SYSTEM
You can run RLRH EXTON live (i.e. from a DVD or USB stick) on EFI and non-EFI computers. (Rocky Linux is not a LIVE system). From Wikipedia: A live CD or live DVD is a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive.

CREATE YOUR OWN Rocky Linux System
You can also create your own Rocky Linux system using Refracta Snapshot, which is pre-installed. I.e. change everything to your liking and then create a new ISO. That can be done after a hard drive installation. If you have plenty of RAM it is also possible to create a new ISO while running RLRH EXTON live.

MORE ABOUT RLRH EXTON
Gnome 40 is used as DE. Two kernels are installed – 6.5.3-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64 and 6.5.3-amd64-exton. Use the one you prefer (after a hard drive installation).

INSTALL TO HARD DRIVE
Install to hard drive during a live session using Refracta Installer. Do it like this in VirtualBox or VMware:
1. Prepare an install partition of about 3OGB and a SWAP partition of 2GB in advance.
2. Open up a terminal as root and run the command refractainstaller. Follow the instructions – watch screenshot 1.
3. Refrain from installing a boot loader (Grub2) – watch screenshot 2. Refracta Installer is made for Debian systems so installing Grub2 won’t work. You’ll have to chroot to do that.
4. Chroot and install Grub2. Read my INSTRUCTION. I.e. run command 1) – 8). Watch this screenshot…
IMPORTANT NOTE: You shall not use Refracta Installer for installing Grub2 on EFI computers. If you already have one Linux system installed on your computer you can just edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg or /etc/grub.d/40_custom so that RLRH EXTON can boot. Read this INSTRUCTION…
You may also benefit from reading my instruction How-to dual-boot, triple-boot or multi-boot Linux with Windows in a simple way and be happy…

USING REFRACTA SNAPSHOT
Open up a terminal as root and run the command refractasnapshot. The just follow the instructions given by the program. Watch this screenshot when Refracta Snapshot has started and this screenshot when everything is ready. The whole process will only take a few minutes to complete. You’ll find your new ISO in /home/snapshot.
NOTE 1: You will get a message saying that your ISO won’t boot on EFI computers. Just ignore it. I have fixed this issue.

PASSWORDS
Log in as the normal user user with password live or as root with password root. While logged in as user you can use Sudo to become root.

Samba client
You can use Gnome Files (Nautilus File Manager) to connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network. Watch this screenshot.

Wireless connections
Normally NetworkManager works very well in RLRH EXTON. Just add your WiFi Network password and connect – watch this screenshot…

Package Management in RPM-based distros
Read this instruction about DNF. DNF is the successor program of YUM (Yellowdog Updater Modified) and is the default package manager on Fedora and RHEL. The name DNF is short for Dandified YUM.
Basically there are only three commands to use:
1. sudo dnf upgrade ‐‐refresh
2. sudo dnf install MyUsefulPackage
3. sudo dnf remove MyBadPackage

VirtualBox/VMware
VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed so you can run RLRH EXTON in full screen both in VirtualBox and VMware.

Study all installed packages in RLRH EXTON Build 230922.

NOTE: You can only use Refracta Snapshot while “my” kernel 6.5.3-amd64-exton is running.

How to change kernels
After a hard drive installation you can change to one of Rocky Linux original kernels by running this command:
sudo dracut ‐‐kver 6.5.3-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64
(Then reboot of course).

UNIQUE

RLRH EXTON is unique. I.e. there is no other live version of Rocky Linux around (as far as I know).

SCREENSHOTS
1. The GDM login screen. If you want to log in as root to Gnome you shall choose “Not listed?”.
2. Showing how to fix a wired Network connection (sometimes necessary).
3. Showing how to mount a NTFS partition. The package ntfs-3g has to be installed first. Do it with the command sudo dnf install ntfs-3g. (I forgot to do that).
4. RLRH EXTON is running in VMware.

DOWNLOAD

RLRH EXTON 64bit version 230922 can be downloaded from SourceForge.netFast, secure and free downloads from the largest Open Source applications and software directory.

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40), Kodi 19.4 and kernel 5.18.3-amd64-exton :: Build 220617

NEWS/CHANGES 220617
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Matrix 19.4 – latest version. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. It is designed around a “10-foot user interface” for use with televisions and remote controls. Kodi runs very well in MeX. On a web site called FireStickTricks you can find instructions how to install 27 (?!) extra Kodi Builds with their own repositories and skins. The article is called Best Kodi Builds December 2022. I’ve tried Grindhouse today. Works very well. Otherwise MeX version 220617 works in the same way as previous versions.

NEWS/CHANGES 220617
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 220617 is based only on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.15) with “my” special kernel 5.18.3-amd64-exton. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 220617. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 40. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed in MeX Build 220617) to create your own installable Ubuntu Live DVD once you have installed MeX to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Ubuntu 22.04 LTS live system. When you start Refracta Snapshot it will look like this. You don’t even have to install MeX to hard drive before you can use the Refracta Snapshot. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Ubuntu system while running MeX from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO) will only take 10 – 30 min!

DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment – Build 211215 – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40, Enlightenment 0.24.2, penguins-eggs (remaster tool) and kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21

About DebEX Barebone Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment, DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE Plasma Linux 64 bit
All three systems/distributions are based on Debian. Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40 and Enlightenment 0.24.2 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment Build 211215. Gnome 3.38 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE Plasma Desktop 5:20 is used in DebEX KDE. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

NEWS 211215 about DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment – a penguins-eggs Build
A new version of DebEX – based on Debian Sid (unstable) – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40, Enlightenment 0.24.2 and kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21 is ready. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of December 15, 2021.

Most important Changes
When you start up DebEX Build 211215 live (from a DVD or a USB stick) you will end up logged in as the ordinary user user to the Budgie Desktop. The password for user is live. You can log out from Budgie and log in again to Gnome or Enlightenment. You can also log in from LightDM as root (super admin). The password for root is root. NOTE: You can’t log in to the Enlightenment Desktop when running DebEX Build 211215 in VirtualBox or VMware. You can use the Calamares 3.2.48-1 Installer Framework to install DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment to your computer in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. Watch this animated GIF. My other DebEX builds were created with Refracta Snapshot. This DebEX Build (211215) is, however, created with a remaster tool called penguins-eggs. Very easy to handle. Penguins-eggs is a console utility, in active development, who let you to remaster your system and redistribute it as iso images or from the lan via PXE remote boot. You can use penguins-eggs in any Debian/Ubuntu system installed to hard drive. Basically you only need to start up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c. Then just follow the instructions – see the screenshots below. If you haven’t installed Calamares you will be asked to do so. Do that even if you already have Calamares installed. A system/ISO built with penguins-eggs must use a special Calamares version to be installable. Penguins-eggs is developed by Piero Proietti. It is based on Remastersys, Refracta, Systemback and father Knoppix.

How-to use penguins-eggs
1. Install DebEX (or any other Debian/Ubuntu based system) to hard drive
2. Change everything to your liking
3. Open up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c
Screenshot 1NOTE: If you choose fast your new ISO will be ready in about five minutes (even in VirtualBox). If you choose max it will take about two hours (in VirtualBox), but the ISO will be about 500 MB smaller. (As regards new builds of DebEX Build 211215). A smaller ISO has one disadvantage. It doesn’t boot as fast as the one built using the option fast.

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian “Sid” and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40) and kernel 5.15.5-exton – now also with Kodi 19.3 :: Build 211211

NEWS/CHANGES 211211
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Matrix 19.3 – latest version. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. NOTE though
Calamares Installer has been upgraded to 3.2.41.1. If you use it for installing MeX to hard drive you will notice that Calamares will be uninstalled afterwards. If you want to create your own Ubuntu ISO with Refracta Snapshot you should reinstall Calamares using Synaptic. For Calamares to work properly you must replace /usr/bin/calamares-logs-helper with this file.

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian “Sid” and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40) and kernel 5.15.5-exton :: Build 211207

NEWS/CHANGES 211207
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 211207 is based only on Debian Sid and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.13) with “my” special kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 211207. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 40. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

MORE MeX NEWS 211207
1. The MeX ISO is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive.
2. Another big improvement is that MeX now can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can eject the disc (DVD)/USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run MeX that way. The ISO file is of only 1400 MB so MeX will run super fast from RAM!
3. I have replaced Google Chrome with Firefox. Google Chrome is no longer needed to be able to run Netflix in Linux.
4. The best thing with this new MeX build – Create your own installable Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Live DVD with Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed)! The whole “remaster process” is so simple that a 10 year old child can do it.
5. I have installed Calamares Installer as in many of my other Linux builds. Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Very easy to use. You can use Calamares to install MeX on both UEFI computers and non UEFI computers (for example VirtualBox and VMware).
6. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed so you can run MeX in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot.

Who can benefit from MeX?
All who like Debian/Ubuntu and want a system that is easy to use and maintain. And of course those who want to create their own Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system in a very simple way with Refracta Snapshot. Regarding MeX also those who want to run a Linux system super fast from RAM and/or like to run Linux from a USB flash drive. And those who want a new kernel – 5.15.5 and be among the very first people to have Ubuntu 22.04 LTS stable installed in April 2022.

ArchEX (Arch Linux) Live with Deepin 20.2.1, GNOME 40, Gnome Classic, LXQt 0.17, LXDE, kernel 5.12.6-arch1-1, Yay, Spotify and Calamares Installer – Build 210526

NEWS about ArchEX 210526
A new version of ArchEX is ready! In this new version, which I call ArchEX 2021, I have added the Deepin 20.2.1 (latest) Desktop environment. Deepin (made in China!) is devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users. I came to like Deepin very much when I installed it in ExTiX 21.5-2. So I thought why not install Deepin also in ArchEX? Furthermore I have added the GNOME 40 (latest) and LXQt 0.17 (latest) Desktop environments. As “extra” Desktop environments I’ve added Gnome Classic and LXDE. So altogether five (5) different Desktops environments to try out while running ArchEX live or from hard drive!

Study all installed packages in ArchEX 2021 with Deepin/GNOME 40/Gnome Classic/LXQt/LXDE.

Why trust a Chinese Distribution? The Deepin Desktop environment is developed in China and basically based on Debian.

How To dual boot, triple boot or multi boot Linux with Windows in a simple way and be happy
Before installing ArchEX or any other Linux system my general installation instructions may be of interest.

WHAT IS ArchEX?

ArchEX 64 bit is a new (210526) Linux live DVD based on Arch Linux. Arch motto is KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). ArchEX uses kernel 5.12.6-arch1-1, Deepin 20.2.1, GNOME 40, GNOME Classic, LXDE and LXQt 0.17.0 Desktop environments. Deepin Desktop (made in China!) is devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users. About LXQt 0.17.0: LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel. GNOME 40 provides a focused working environment that helps you get things done. It is packed with features that will make you more productive.

WHO should run Arch Linux?

My answer: The system fits the “advanced” Linux user/enthusiast, who would be willing to run an occasional command from time to time.

BENEFITS of ArchEX/Arch Linux
“Cutting Edge”-software and speed. You will for example always run the latest kernel if you upgrade ArchEX/Arch (for example) every month.
