DebEX Barebone 32 bit – Build 240423 – based on Debian sid/trixie (upcoming Debian 13) with LXQt 1.4 and Refracta Snapshot

NEWS 240423 about DebEX LXQt 32 bit Build 240423
I’ve made a new DebEX system for older computers. It uses LXQt 1.4  as Desktop environment. LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel. Only a minimum of packages are installed. The ISO file is of only 1610 MB! Refracta Snapshot is pre-installed also in this version of DebEX, which means that you can make your own Debian 32 bit (Intel x86 32-bit architecture) live installable system in a very simple way. I mean change everything to your liking and then create a new ISO.

What is it for?
This version of DebEX is mainly made for older computers. I could run and install DebEX LXQt without problems on my oldest computer. An Acer Aspire 5102WLMi from the year 2006. So now you too can bring back life to your (very) old computer!

Run Raspberry Pi’s PIXEL Desktop on a PC or Mac – an Exton modified Build 240414 with Refracta Snapshot (so you can create your own Raspberrypi Debian 12 Pixel system)

NEWS 240414 about Raspberry Pi Debian 12 Pixel – 32bit – an Exton Build
 Study all included packages in Build 240414 – latest by 240414. I’ve added NetworkManager and also Wicd, which makes it easier to configure wireless connections. Choose the one which works for you.

Most important changes in Build 240414
This build replaces version 161223 , 170425, 180316, 180928, 190705, 191102, 201108, 220505 and 230319. I’ve upgraded Raspbian/Debian from Bullseye  to Bookworm – Debian 12. I’ve also upgraded the kernel from 6.1.0-6-686-pae to 6.8.1-pae-exton. I’ve also included kernel 6.1.0-6-686, which shall be used on older computers. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB. Firefox have been installed so you’ll have a browser when logged in as root. You can’t run Chromium as root.  In Build 240414 I have removed Chromium. I saw no advantage in keeping it. You can run the system in full screen in VirtualBox. That’s because VirtualBox’s Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot. I’ve also installed Samba so that you can reach your Windows computers in your home network.

NOTE 1

This Debian PIXEL 32bit build is for UEFI and non-efi computers. So you can boot Debian PIXEL in both UEFI and Legacy mode.

NOTE 2
On certain Desktop computers you may have to start Debian PIXEL in “failsafe” graphics mode. I.e. nomodeset.

NOTE 3: Version 240414 of Debian PIXEL can run on really old computers. As an example I could run it on my 17 years old laptop Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi.

OLD NEWS FROM 161223

On December 22, 2016 I read that the Raspberry Pi Foundation had announced the release of a new PIXEL image that can be booted on a PC or Mac. Study this site. I saw immediately that there was no installer included, which I thought was a little disappointing. Come to think of Refracta Tools, which work very well in Debian and Ubuntu. I quickly made a “remix” of the Raspberry Pi Foundation PIXEL image. My remix thus include Refracta Tools. This means that you can easily install the system to hard drive and you can just as easily make your own remix of the Raspberry Pi Foundation PIXEL image. I’ve added a few packages. Most important Synaptic, which I find essential.

About the PIXEL Desktop
Raspbian (Raspberry Pi OS) had its biggest update ever in September, 2016, thanks to a dazzling new desktop environment called PIXEL. Raspbian with PIXEL (which stands for “Pi Improved Xwindow Environment, Lightweight”) is a huge software update to the desktop environment. It introduces a crisp new interface, and is brimming with new programs and features.

VirtualBox and VMware
My build/image works very well in VirtualBox and VMware. I.e. you can run the system directly from the ISO file and also install it to a virtual hard drive. You can of course also make your own Raspbian/Debian system with the the PIXEL Desktop using Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed). NOTE: As regards Build 240414 you can run the system in full screen in VirtualBox. That’s because VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot.

KERNELS
Kernel 6.8.1-pae-exton is used in Build 240414. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB. If you want to run the system (which is 32bit) on older computers you shall use kernel 6.1.0-18-686, which also is included.

Login and passwords
Log in to the PIXEL Desktop as the ordinary user user or as root. The passwords are raspberry respectively root. When logged in as user you can use Sudo to become root. (Command: sudo su). When running Debian Pixel live (from a DVD or a USB stick) you’ll end up (after the boot process) logged in automatically as the user user in X (PIXEL Desktop). You can log out and log in again as root (other) if you want – see below.

Windows Virtual Desktop on Azure
For smoother Raspberry PI performance a virtual PC such as azure windows virtual desktop which can be the best option due to its high end functionality and 24*7 top-notch support from a reliable desktop as a service provider.

Runs from RAM
Another great thing is that this build can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (load to RAM). When running Debian Pixel on an UEFI computer you shall go to “Advanced – load to RAM”.  When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or the USB stick. You’ll need at least 4 GB RAM to run the system that way. I.e. super fast!

Spotify
You may want to run Spotify. In this version of Debian Pixel you can’t install Spotify with the command sudo apt install spotify-client. Too many unfulfilled dependencies. You can, however, run Spotify Web Player. Use Firefox for that. Watch a screenshot when Spotify Web Player is running.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own installable Raspberry Pi Debian 12 PIXEL system once you have installed my build to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Debian live system. Start Refracta from Menu >> System tools >> Refracta snapshot. You don’t even have to install my build to hard drive before you can use the Refracta Snapshot. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Debian PIXEL system while running my build from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO file) will only take 20 – 60 min! Please edit the configuration file /etc/refractasnapshot.conf first. Change line 45 and 46. I.e. decide where you want the ISO file to be build. The whole thing is very simple. NOTE: You can also do everything in VirtualBox or VMware. Use FileZilla (pre-installed) to transfer your new ISO file to your server. Or use Samba to transfer the ISO file to one of your Windows computers in your home Network – screenshot. In VirtualBox you can also drop the new ISO directly on your host Desktop. NOTE: You may have to do run Refracta Snapshot in three steps (1, 2 , 3).

Install to Debian PIXEL hard drive
Just start Refracta Installer from the Menu >> System tools >> Refracta Installer and follow the instructions. Very simple. After a hard drive installation Grub’s boot menu will look like this.



Install Debian PIXEL to a USB stick

You can use Rufus in Windows. Persistence can’t be enabled though. The best way to achieve persistence on a USB stick is to burn Debian PIXEL to a DVD, start up the system from the DVD and then use Refracta Installer for the installation. Choose to install Grub in MBR on /dev/sdb. (Normally your USB stick, but check it carefully!) I.e. you will get a chance to choose between /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. This method will give you perfect persistence.

DSL-e based on DSL (Damn Small Linux) 2024 – 32 bit – with LXDE DE and kernel 6.6.15-exton :: Build 240207

NEWS 240207 ABOUT DSL-e
I’ve made a remaster of Damn Small Linux 2024 – 32 bit. DSL 2024 is based on Debian 12 (bookworm) and antiX. The New DSL 2024 has been reborn as a compact Linux distribution tailored for low-spec x86 computers. It packs a lot of applications into a small package. All the applications are chosen for their functionality, small size, and low dependencies. DSL 2024 also has many text-based applications that make it handy to use in a term window or TTY.

The original DSL was of 50MB many years ago. DSL 2024 is of 700MB. The reason for that according to the developer: A 50MB distribution, was a lot of fun and one of the things I am most proud of as a personal accomplishment. However, as a concept, it was in the right place at the right time, and the computer industry has changed a lot since then. While it would be possible to make a bootable Xwindows 50MB distribution today, it would be missing many drivers and have only a handful of very rudimentary applications. People would find such a distribution a fun toy or something to build upon, but it would not be usable for the average computer user out of the gate.

My remaster of DSL 2024 is of 1110MB. The reason for that is that I’ve added some real useful packages:
1. Firefox (a good Web Browser is a must I think)
2. Changed Desktop DE from Fluxbox to LXDE, which is more useful
3. GParted
4. PulseAudio and Pavucontrol (for sound to work)
5. Synaptic (a really useful package manager)
6. VLC (a Multimedia Player)
7. Changed kernel from 5.10.188-antix to 6.6.15-exton.
NOTE1: I could run and install DSL-e without problems on my oldest computer. An Acer Aspire 5102WLMi from the year 2006. So now you too can bring back life to your (very) old computer!

DebEX LXQt Bookworm (Debian 12) – 32 bit – for older computers with LXQt Desktop 1.2, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 6.3.0-rc6-exton ::: Build 230418

About all DebEX systems
All four systems/distributions are based on Debian Sid (unstable). Gnome 43.4 and Enlightenment 0.25.4 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Gnome/Enlightenment. Gnome 41 is used in DebEX GnomeKDE Plasma Desktop 5.27.2 is used in DebEX KDE. LXQt 1.2  is used in DebEX Build 230418 – 32 bit. The system language is English (in all four versions of DebEX).

Debian 12 (Sid/upcoming Bookworm) is still supposed to be unstable, but the “full hard freeze” took place already 230312.

RaspEX Kodi 32-bit with LXQt Desktop and Kodi 18.7 with the Netflix addon – Build 210211

I’ve made a new extra version of RaspEX Kodi 32-bit. This version is based on Raspbian (Raspberry Pi OS) and Debian Bullseye (upcoming Debian 11). The LXDE Desktop is replaced with LXQt, which has a more “modern look” than LXDE. Historically, LXQt is the product of the merge between LXDE-Qt, an initial Qt flavour of LXDE, and Razor-qt, a project aiming to develop a Qt based desktop environment with similar objectives as the current LXQt. In RaspEX Kodi Build 210211 I’ve kept Kodi at version 18.7 (stable). It was therefore possible to install the Netflix addon among many other addons. With Kodi 18.7 it is also easier to install extra repositories. Read about the best Kodi repos 2021.

I’ve also upgraded the kernel from 4.19.0-6-686-pae to 4.19.0-12-686-pae. I’ve also included kernel 4.19.0-12-686, which shall be used on older computers. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB. Firefox have been installed so you’ll have a browser when logged in as root. You can’t run Chromium as root. Another good thing about Firefox is that you can use it to watch Netflix movies. In Build 201108 I have removed Chromium. I saw no advantage in keeping it. KNOPPIX-EXTON 32 bit, Build 191211 – a remaster of KNOPPIX 8.6.1 – will bring your old computer back to life!

Version 8.6.1 of KNOPPIX is based on Debian/stable (Buster), with some packages from Debian/testing and unstable (Sid) for newer graphics drivers or desktop software packages. It uses kernel 5.3.5 and Xorg 7.7 (core 1.20.4) for supporting current computer hardware.

About Knoppix-Exton Build 191211
The original KNOPPIX 8.6.1 ISO is of 4320 MB. It has two kernels, 32 bit and 64 bit and almost all well-known Debian packages (including almost all KDE and Gnome packages) pre-installed. My remaster (the ISO) is of “only” 2170 MB, which makes it easier to run the system live from RAM with the boot command knoppix toram – see below.

Knoppix-Exton uses only the LXDE Desktop – screenshot. Study all installed packages in Knoppix-Exton as of 191211. You can of course add (or remove) packages even while running the system live. Use Synaptic for that. Kernel 5.3.5 is used in KNOPPIX 8.6.1/Knoppix-Exton.

Install Knoppix-Exton (KNOPPIX 8.6.1) to hard drive
KNOPPIX uses Grub Legacy as boot loader. So if you already have Grub2 installed you should avoid installing Grub when installing Knoppix-Exton. Just add start lines for Knoppix-Exton in /boot/grub/grub.cfg (in the system where you have installed Grub2). The installation program is started from the Menu –> Knoppix –> KNOPPIX HD Install – watch this screenshot.

Install Knoppix-Exton (KNOPPIX 8.6.1) to a USB stick with no persistence
Use Rufus 3.8 in Windows. It will look like this – see below.

Install/flash Knoppix-Exton (KNOPPIX 8.6.1) to a USB stick with persistence
Burn the Knoppix-Exton ISO to a DVD and start up your computer from it. Or use the USB stick created with Rufus and flash Knoppix-Exton on another USB stick. Note that you can run Knoppix-Exton live first and change everything to your liking. After that all your changes will be transferred to the USB stick if you use the “Flash Knoppix” alternative. See screenshots below.
1. GParted is started just to be sure of the correct device to install to.
2. I’m running Knoppix-Exton from /dev/sdb1. The install target is /dev/sdc (SanDisk Cruzer Contour).

Syslinux
Syslinux is used as boot loader when you use the “Flash Knoppix” alternative. Note that you can use this alternative also when installing KNOPPIX/Knoppix-Exton in VirtualBox or VMware. Then your whole virtual hard disk will be used. Watch this screenshot when I have installed Knoppix-Exton to hard drive in VirtualBox.

KNOPPIX cheatcodes/boot codes
When starting KNOPPIX/Knoppix-Exton live (from a DVD or USB stick) you can use certain boot commands. The command knoppix toram is just an example. Study all cheatcodes…

Using Samba to connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network
Just open the file manager PCManFM and go to (for example smb://192.168.0.32) as this screenshot shows. You’ll find the correct IP-address by opening a Command Prompt in Windows and running the command ipconfig.

Why a remaster of KNOPPIX 8.6.1?
KNOPPIX 8.6.1 is the best Knoppix version ever. Knoppix was my very first Linux system to remaster many years ago. Nostalgia!

Knoppix-Exton can’t be downloaded anymore. The system a bit outdated by now (230924). I’ve decided to abandon this project. Latest version of KNOPPIX is 9.2 from April 2021.

Run Raspberry Pi’s PIXEL Desktop on a PC or Mac – an Exton modified Build 191102 with Refracta Snapshot (so you can create your own Raspberrypi Debian 10 Pixel system)

My previous Debian Pixel Build from is from 190705 . Study all included packages in Build 191102- latest by 191102. I’ve added NetworkManager and also Wicd, which makes it easier to configure wireless connections. Choose the one which works for you.

Reason for a new Raspberry Pi Debian 10 Pixel build right now
Yesterday (191101) two members on this site wrote to me saying that Refracta Installer didn’t work for them. I checked it and they were right. The Refracta Installer had to be upgraded from version 9.3.3 to version 9.5.3. While I was at it I also upgraded Refracta Snapshot to the latest version – 10.2.9.

Most important changes in Build 191102
This build replaces version 161223 , 170425, 180316, 180928 and 190705 . I’ve upgraded Raspbian/Debian from Stretch to Buster – Debian 10 stable. I’ve also upgraded the kernel from 4.19.0-5-686-pae to 4.19.0-6-686-pae. I’ve also included kernel 4.19.0-6-686, which shall be used on older computers. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB. Firefox have been installed so you’ll have a browser when logged in as root. You can’t run Chromium as root. Another good thing about Firefox is that you can use it to watch Netflix movies.

OLD NEWS FROM 161223

On December 22, 2016 I read that the Raspberry Pi Foundation had announced the release of a new PIXEL image that can be booted on a PC or Mac. Study this site. I saw immediately that there was no installer included, which I thought was a little disappointing. Come to think of Refracta Tools, which work very well in Debian and Ubuntu. I quickly made a “remix” of the Raspberry Pi Foundation PIXEL image. My remix thus include Refracta Tools. This means that you can easily install the system to hard drive and you can just as easily make your own remix of the Raspberry Pi Foundation PIXEL image. I’ve added a few packages. Most important Synaptic, which I find essential.

About the PIXEL Desktop
Raspbian had its biggest update ever in September, 2016, thanks to a dazzling new desktop environment called PIXEL. Raspbian with PIXEL (which stands for “Pi Improved Xwindow Environment, Lightweight”) is a huge software update to the desktop environment. It introduces a crisp new interface, and is brimming with new programs and features.

VirtualBox and VMware
My build/image works very well in VirtualBox and VMware. I.e. you can run the system directly from the ISO file and also install it to a virtual hard drive. You can of course also make your own Raspbian/Debian system with the the PIXEL Desktop using Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed).

KERNEL
Kernel 4.19.0-6-686-pae is used in Build 191102. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB. If you want to run the system (which is 32bit) on older computers you shall use kernel 4.19.0-6-686, which also is included.

Login and passwords
Log in to the PIXEL Desktop as the ordinary user pi or as root. The passwords are raspberrypi respectively root. When logged in as pi you can use Sudo to become root. (Command: sudo su). When running Debian Pixel live (from a DVD or a USB stick) you’ll end up (after the boot process) logged in automatically as the user pi in X (PIXEL Desktop).

Windows Virtual Desktop on Azure
For smoother RaspberryPI performance a virtual PC such as azure windows virtual desktop which can be the best option due to its high end functionality and 24*7 top-notch support from a reliable desktop as a service provider.

Runs from RAM
Another great thing is that this build can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 3 (load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or the USB stick. You’ll need at least 4 GB RAM to run the system that way. I.e. super fast!

Spotify
You may want to run Spotify. In this version of Debian Pixel you can’t install Spotify with the command sudo apt install spotify-client. Too many unfulfilled dependencies. You can, however, run Spotify Web Player. Use Firefox for that. Watch a screenshot when Spotify Web Player is running.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own installable Raspberry Pi Debian 10 PIXEL system once you have installed my build to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Debian live system. Start Refracta from Menu >> System tools >> Refracta snapshot. You don’t even have to install my build to hard drive before you can use the Refracta Snapshot. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Debian PIXEL system while running my build from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO file) will only take 20 – 60 min! Please edit the configuration file /etc/refractasnapshot.conf first. Change line 45 and 46. I.e. decide where you want the ISO file to be build. The whole thing is very simple. NOTE: You can also do everything in VirtualBox or VMware. Use FileZilla (pre-installed) to transfer your new ISO file to your server. Or use Samba to transfer the ISO file to one of your Windows computers in your home Network – screenshot. NOTE: Do it while logged in as root.

Install to Debian PIXEL hard drive
Just start Refracta Installer from Menu >> System tools >> Refracta Installer and follow the instructions. Very simple.

Install Debian PIXEL to a USB stick
You can use Rufus in Windows. Persistence can’t be enabled though. You can also use UNetbootin in Windows or Linux. The best way to do it is to burn Debian PIXEL to a DVD, start up the system from the DVD and then use Refracta Installer for the installation. Choose to install Grub in MBR on /dev/sdb. (Normally your USB stick, but check it carefully!) I.e. you will get a chance to choose between /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. This method will (of course) give you perfect persistence.

A new version of EXTON Linux MultibootCD 6-OS is ready. Changes: New (latest) versions of Porteus, GParted, Puppy Linux (PuppEX Slack64), 4MLinux, SliTaz and Tiny Core. Note about VirtualBox: All systems but Porteus can run in VirtualBox. Why Porteus won’t run I don’t know.

What’s the point of running EXTON Linux MultiBootCD 6-OS?
Anyone who is slightly interested in Linux and want to see how far the development of the most famous mini Linux systems have reached should try it. Easy then to test the current systems on the CD (DVD) live to find out which one suits you (and your computer) best.

Exton|Defender mga (Mageia 5) 32 bit build 150701 with Cinnamon 2.4.5

exton-defender-mga5-screenshot-smallMy second version of Exton|Defender is a remaster of Mageia 5, released in June 2015. Mageia has been the third most popular Linux system in the world for some time now (according to Distrowatch.com).

My changes of Mageia 5
I have removed the Gnome Desktop environment and installed Cinnamon instead. Furthermore I have installed the following rescue and repairing tools: NTFS-3g, GParted, PartImage, Sfdisk (util-linux-ng), Rsync, Ddrescue, FSArchiver, TestDisk and Midnight Commander. Other programs (among many others): NetworkManager, Firefox, Gimp, Google Chrome (for Netflix), Emacs, Safecopy, kernel headers and many compilation tools. Study the full list of installed packages. The system language is ENGLISH.

Who is Exton|Defender mga 32 bit Cinnamon for?

Exton|Defender mga aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions. There is also no official live Mageia 5 ISO with Cinnamon for downloading. (Only with KDE and Gnome). Exton|Defender can also be useful for people with older 32 bit computers who like to run an eminent Linux system (Mageia) live with some speed.
