PuppEX Jammy64 (Puppy Linux) compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS :: Build 230222

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Jammy64 22.04 230222
This Puppy derivative is built from Puppy_Linux_vanillapup 22.04.39, which is build from Ubuntu packages and packages build from source. Puppy_Linux_vanillapup is the best Puppy Linux system I’ve ever tried so I decided to make it even better. My first version of PuppEX Jammy64 is from 220630.
My changes of the original system 230222:
1. I’ve replaced kernel 5.15 with kernel 6.1.12-exton with support for “extra everything”
2. Development tools (build-essential) are installed
3. Latest Firefox and Google Chrome are pre-installed
4. Added the ntfs-3g package (so NTFS partitions are writable)
5. Added GParted
6. Added video codecs (libavcodec58) so that YouTube videos and Netflix movies can run in Firefox.
The ISO size has therefore increased from 343 MB to 879 MB, but PuppEX runs nevertheless as fast as the original Puppy, which means that it runs very very fast!
NOTE: On some computers you may have to wait 60 seconds before the boot process starts. You will see a message saying “Pausing for 60 seconds…”
This error won’t occur after a hard drive (frugal) installation.
COMPATIBLE WITH Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
PuppEX Jammy64 is compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish), which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 22.04 can be installed and used in PuppEX. You can use the Synaptic Package Manager or the apt command. (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage etc).
IMPORTANT NOTE: The normal remasterpup2 script (which is included in all Puppy Linux versions) doesn’t work in Puppy_Linux_vanillapup. I had to use my “special remaster tricks” to be able to build PuppEX Jammy64. I have therefore kept my two versions of PuppEX Focal64 20.04 in which the remasterpup2 script works very well. It works very well in PuppEX Slack64 15.0 too.
NOTE about VirtualBox/VMware: You can’t run this version of PuppEX in VirtualBox or VMware. PuppEX Jammy64 runs pretty well in Qemu in Linux though.

PuppEX Slack64 15.0 built using Woof-CE scripts :: 220625

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Slack64 15.0 220625
This Puppy Linux derivative is built by me using Puppy Linux Woof-CE Builder. It is compatible with Slackware 15.0 and uses kernel 5.18.6-exton. This Puppy system works very well on UEFI and non-UEFI computers. You can build your own Puppy Linux Slackware 15 compatible system using PuppEX as “groundwork”. Just start the remaster tool (Puppy simple CD remaster) and follow the instructions given by the remaster script. Watch this screenshot.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Use Balena Etcher when installing PuppEX to a USB stick in Windows. Other similar programs (like Rufus or Ventoy) won’t make the USB stick bootable.

PuppEX Focal64 (Puppy Linux) with kernel 5.9.9 (latest) compatible with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS :: Build 201121

NEWS 201126 ABOUT PuppEX Build 201121 and Nvidia
Today I’ve discovered that Nvidia’s Proprietary Graphics Driver can be installed in PuppEX Build 201121 after all! Not version 450.80.02, but version 455.45.01. Watch this screenshot. Read this Article about the Open-Source NVIDIA/Nouveau vs NVIDIA Proprietary Driver.  Read about how to install the driver...

ABOUT PuppEX Focal64 Build 201121
A new PuppEX Focal64 version with kernel 5.9.9 (latest) is ready today. Unfortunately it does not have Nvidia’s Proprietary Graphics driver 450.80.02 installed (as Build 201119 has). I could not find a patch for kernel 5.9. The good news is that this new version has the kernel sources for kernel 5.9.9. This means that VirtualBox Guest Additions can be installed by you. Which also means that you can run PuppEX in full screen in VirtualBox (among other things). Watch this screenshot. When running PuppEX Build 201121 in VirtualBox you shall first save your session. After a reboot you can install the Additions. When doing so you will get an error message saying failed to remove installed version filelist not found. Fix it by running the command rm /usr/sbin/vbox-greeter /usr/sbin/vbox-uninstall-guest-additions. Watch screenshot 1 and screenshot 2.

PuppEX Focal64 (Puppy Linux) compatible with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS :: Build 201119

ABOUT PuppEX Focal Build 201119
My newest Puppy derivative is built from Puppy Linux 9.5 FossaPup64. I have added Firefox (for Netflix), SpotifyPCManFM, LXterminal and many development tools. I have also compiled a new kernel – 5.7.19-exton. Furthermore I have installed Nvidia’s Proprietary Graphics driver 450.80.02. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is “good/modern” enough. If not automatically just open up a terminal and run the command nvidia-xconfig. Then restart X.

PuppEX Focal64 is compatible with Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa) LTS, which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 20.04 can be installed and used in PuppEX. The PuppEX Focal64 ISO is of 1020 MB.

Performance
Puppy Fossapup64 original is of only 409 MB. PuppEX Focal64 is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems. (Puppy/PuppEX runs from RAM).

About Raspup Buster for Raspberry Pi 1, Raspberry Pi Zero, Raspberry Pi 2, Raspberry Pi 3 and Raspberry Pi 4 – all from the one download – test 200514

My test of Raspup Buster 8.2 built from the Woof-CE build system originally developed by Barry Kauler, the creator of Puppy Linux

Raspup supports Raspberry Pi 1, Raspberry Pi Zero, Raspberry Pi 2, Raspberry Pi 3 and Raspberry Pi 4 all from the one download.

Raspup’s features
– pTheme global theme manager designed by zigbert(AKA Sigmund Berglund)

– JWM-2.3.6 window manager from Joe Wing and Rox Filer updated by @woodenshoe-wi
– Run internet apps as unprivileged user “spot”, see Menu > System > Login and Security Manager and click the “Help” button.
– shinobar’s on the fly SFS loading and unloading – updated version
– Well stocked package manager (PPM) with access to Raspbian repositories
– SFS Manager for extra large packages including LibreOffice, browsers, full development environment (compilers, headers and assemblers) and kernel sources plus more.
– A great suite of programs included by default including but not limited to, web browser (Midori), word processor (Abiword), spread sheet (Gnumeric), email client (Sylpheed), chat client (irrsi), image editor (mtpaint), video player (mplayer), audio/video processor (ffmpeg), music player (pMusic), audio editor (mhwaveedit), text editor (geany, nano, leafpad), ftp file transfer (gftp), file sharing clients and servers (ftp, samba), games, printing (cups) and even more!
– Amazing size at ~375MB, which includes 3 kernels to support the different Pi versions.

My test results
I ran Raspup on a Raspberry Pi 4. I installed Raspup to a SD class 10 card using Rufus 3.10 in Windows. According to my experience Rufus is the best (most reliable) image writing program there is out there. I.e. other programs may not make the card bootable. Raspup works very well (as expected). Like Puppy Linux Raspup runs from RAM. So it is quite fast. When rebooting or power off the system you will be asked to save your system changes. Do that and be sure to change boot options so that Raspup will acknowledge your system changes. Watch this screenshot. As you can see my save space is called raspupsave-puppex. Raspup is compatible with Debian Buster (Debian 10). New packages are easily installed with Raspup’s Package Manager. Watch this screenshot. Be sure to update the repositories before you try to install anything.

PuppEX Bionic 64 bit, uefi, compatible with Ubuntu 18.04 :: Build 190331

NEWS 190331
Yesterday I released my first version of PuppEX Bionic64. After that I have discovered a way to install and run Spotify in PuppEX. So now you can run YouTube, Netflix and Spotify in the new PuppEX version of 190331. What more can one wish for?

ABOUT PuppEX Bionic Build 190331
My newest Puppy derivative is built from Puppy Linux 8.0 BionicPup 64 bit. I have added Google Chrome (for Netflix), PCManFM, LXTerminal and many development tools.
