NEWS 260623 about exGENT (Gentoo) 64 bit with systemd

NEW RELEASE 260626
I’ve uploaded a new version of exGENT, which replaces version 260623. In the new version I’ve replaced kernel 7.0.8-amd64-exton with kernel 7.1.1-amd64-exton – watch this screenshot.
While I was at it I’ve also arranged so that you can reach your Windows shares via PCManFM-qt – watch this screenshot.

REPLACEMENT
This version (260626) replaces version 240125 also with systemd.
NOTE 1: In exGENT Build 260626 with systemd and LXQt 2.4.0 I have managed to incorporate Refracta Snapshot, which means that you can use it to create your own Gentoo/exGENT System. I mean change everything to your liking and then create a new ISO! Read about how to do that below.
NOTE 2: exGENT Build 260626 can run on really old computers. As an example I could run it on my 19 years old laptop Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi. That is remarkable considering that the ISO file is of 4120 MB.

WHAT’S NEW in exGENT Build 260626 with Systemd and LXQt?
I have made a new extra version of exGENT with only a few necessary packages pre-installed. It replaces version 240125. The system is built from “scratch”, using Catalyst. In Gentoo, Catalyst is the official meta-tool used by the Release Engineering team to automate the building and generation of installation tarballs (known as stage files) and bootable live media (like ISO files). It is the exact same tool that Gentoo uses internally to build its official distribution releases. With Catalyst, you can customize and package a Gentoo environment exactly to your specifications. exGENT Build 260626 uses LXQt 2.4.0 as Desktop Environment and kernel 7.1.1-amd64-exton while running the system live. When running exGENT from hard drive you can switch to kernel 6.18.32-gentoo-r3-exgent (Gentoo’s original kernel with patches).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Also this version of exGENT can be remastered by you using exGENT as a template. I.e. change everything to your linking. Then fire up Refracta Snapshot from the menu. Since Refracta Snapshot is made especially for Debian it does not work “out of the box” in exGENT. You will have to “manually” run two commands in the end of the remaster process. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OpenRC and systemd
The main differences between OpenRC and systemd in Gentoo come down to architecture, complexity, and how they manage your system:
Scope & Design: OpenRC is a minimalist service manager that only handles booting and services (relying on separate tools for logs or network). systemd is a complete system management suite that handles services, logging (journald), logins (logind), and more in a centralized way.
Service Configuration: OpenRC uses traditional, editable shell scripts (/etc/init.d/). systemd uses simple, declarative text unit files (.service).
Gentoo Compatibility: OpenRC is highly flexible and works out-of-the-box with minimalist setups like musl libc. systemd is tightly integrated with standard Linux features and requires selecting specific systemd Gentoo profiles.
Boot Style: OpenRC typically starts services sequentially, while systemd boots them aggressively in parallel for faster startup times.

Unique?
exGENT is unique in a way. If you take a look at Gentoo’s download site for amd64 you can see that there is no ISO with systemd. Only OpenRC. According to my experience it is much easier to create a live system with OpenRC (using Catalyst) . exGENT is of course also unique in a rather important way. It has Refracta Snapshot, which means that you can create your own exGENT/Gentoo system using exGENT as a template. So easy that a ten year old child can do it!

NEWS 260602 about exGENT (Gentoo) 64 bit with OpenRC 0.63.1

REPLACEMENT
This version (260602) replaces version 250126 with OpenRC 0.56.
NOTE 1: In exGENT Build 260602 with OpenRC 0.63.1 and LXQt 2.4.0 I have managed to incorporate Refracta Snapshot, which means that you can use it to create your own Gentoo/exGENT System. I mean change everything to your liking and then create a new ISO! Read about how to do that below.

Performance Without Boundaries: exGENT Revives 20-Year-Old Hardware!
One of the most remarkable achievements of the new exGENT Build 260602 is its unparalleled resource efficiency and backward compatibility. Install to hard drive
Now you can install exGENT to hard drive in two ways. You can still use the install scrips in /root/install. That is the best way to install exGENT on non UEFI computers for example VirtualBox and VMware. The second way is to use Calamares Installer.  You can watch a screenshot showing how it looks when the install scripts are used in VirtualBox…

USED KERNELS
Kernel 7.0.8-amd64-exton is used when you run exGENT live. After a hard drive installation kernel 7.0.10-gentoo-dist will be used. If you want to use Refracta Snapshot you must keep “my” kernel 7.0.8-amd64-exton and /vmlinuz and /initrd.img, which are links to my kernel in /boot.

MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE IN BUILD 260602
Refracta Snapshot is installed. Use it if you want to build you own Gentoo System. Since Refracta Snapshot is made especially for Debian it does not work “out of the box” in exGENT. You will have to “manually” run two commands in the end of the remaster process. Read more about that at the INFO site.

UPGRADE exGENT
As you can see it is more than a year since the previous version of exGENT was released. That’s because everything with Gentoo is extremely time consuming. Installing Gentoo the “Gentoo way” can take several days to perform.

PERFORMANCE
exGENT is a really fast Linux system even though it is a BIG system. (The ISO file is of 5230 MB). You can run it the normal way live or from RAM.  Then use boot alternative 2 (Load to RAM). When running from RAM the System is super fast I would say. You will need at least 16 GB RAM for that.

exGENT Build 250126 is a non Systemd system

Quick install to Hard Drive
exGENT Linux can be installed to hard drive in 3 – 20 min. (Depending on computer type). This means that all of you who might hesitate to perform a normal Gentoo installation – which can take up to a couple of days – now have the chance to get this great Linux system (Gentoo) installed on your computers very easy. Read my instruction about how the installation works.

Rolling distribution
Gentoo/exGENT is a rolling distribution, which implies that once you have installed the system on the hard drive there is no need for re-installations (which otherwise is common in the Linux world).

Study all pre-installed packages in Build 250126.

UPGRADE exGENT
As you can see it is exactly one year since the previous version of exGENT was released. That’s because everything with Gentoo is extremely time consuming. Installing Gentoo the “Gentoo way” can take several days to perform. Just upgrading exGENT from version 240201 to version 250126 took me four (4) days!

NEWS 240201 about exGENT (Gentoo) 64 bit with OpenRC

REPLACEMENT
This version (240201) replaces version 240121/230109 with OpenRC.
NOTE 1: In version 240201 I have uninstalled many packages which are unnecessary in an LXQt environment. Some KDE libraries are left though. They are needed by the Calamares Installer.  I have also added the Spotify app, which you can use if you have a Spotify premium account.
NOTE 2: Unfortunately you’ll have to use a fairly new computer with at least 4GB RAM to be able to run exGENT Build 240201. Otherwise the boot process will stop showing an error message. “Out of space” or something similar.

MORE ABOUT exGENT BUILD 240201
This exGENT version uses the LXQt DE. LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel.  MOST IMPORTANT:
You can now install exGENT to hard drive in two ways. You can still use the install scrips in /root/install. That is the best way to install exGENT on non UEFI computers for example VirtualBox and VMware. The second way is to use Calamares Installer. Using Calamares you can install exGENT in any language.

exGENT Build 240201 is a non Systemd system

INSTALL A NEW KERNEL
After a hard drive installation of exGENT you may want to install a newer kernel than 6.7.1/6.1.67. That can very easy be done with the command sudo emerge ‐‐ask gentoo-kernel-bin. As of 240201 you will get kernel 6.7.2. Since it is a binary “all-round” kernel the installation takes only a couple of minutes. Watch this screenshot…
NOTE: Before running the install command you’ll have to update the repositories with the command emaint sync.

I’ve made a new extra version of exGENT with only a few necessary packages pre-installed. The system is built from “scratch”. I.e. installed the “Gentoo way” following the Gentoo Handbook. It uses LXDE as Desktop Environment and kernel 5.15.80-gentoo-x86_64 (Gentoo’s original kernel) while running the system live (from a DVD or a USB stick). After a hard drive installation kernel 6.7.1 (latest stable kernel version) will be used.  Study all installed packages in Build 240125. This exGENT build is not a replacement for Build 240121, which uses OpenRC init system and has Calamares Installer pre-installed.
KNOWN ISSUE: This Systemd version of exGENT can’t run in VMware. It runs very well in VirtualBox though.

More about Build 240125
1. This exGENT build uses Systemd as init system, while Build 240121 uses OpenRC. Read an article called “Comparison of init systems“.
2. I have not installed Calamares in this build. For hard drive installations the install scripts in the folder /root/install have to be used. Watch a screenshot when the scripts are used in VirtualBox. Read about how to use the scripts.
3. You can run exGENT Build 240125 very well in VirtualBox in both Windows and Linux, but for some unknown reason not in VMware in Windows 11.
4. I was hoping that this “light” version of exGENT would be good for older computers, but unfortunately you’ll have to use a fairly new computer to be able to run exGENT Build 250125. Otherwise the boot process will stop showing an error message.

NEWS 240121 about exGENT (Gentoo) 64 bit

REPLACEMENT
This version (240121) replaces version 230121 (Systemd) and version 230109 (OpenRC).

What’s new in exGENT Build 240121?
The boot loader Grub Legacy has been replaced by Grub2. In exGENT versions before 170309 the file system wasn’t writable when running exGENT live (from DVD). Now you can emerge (install) new programs/packages even while running the system from a DVD or USB stick. If you do that and later decide to install exGENT to hard drive all your changes will follow! (That is if you use the install scripts in /root/install). Furthermore you can install/transfer exGENT to a USB stick with the dd command in Linux or use Rufus or Etcher in Windows. Such installations were impossible before. NOTE: I have not installed Google Chrome. It’s not needed anymore, since Netflix nowadays runs very well in Firefox. About the LXQt Desktop environment: LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. I’ve made a new extra version of exGENT with only a few necessary packages pre-installed. The system is built from “scratch”. I.e. installed the “Gentoo way” following the Gentoo Handbook. It uses LXDE as Desktop Environment and kernel 5.15.80-gentoo-x86_64 (Gentoo’s original kernel) while running the system live (from a DVD or a USB stick). After a hard drive installation kernel 6.1.7 (latest stable kernel version) will be used. The ISO file is of only 2050 MB compared to exGENT LXQt Build 230109, which is of 3450 MB.  Study all installed packages in Build 230121. This exGENT build is not a replacement for Build 230109.

NEWS 230109 about exGENT (Gentoo) 64 bit
I’ve made a new version of exGENT with only a few necessary packages pre-installed. It uses LXQt 1.2 (latest version) as Desktop Environment and kernel 5.15.80-gentoo-x86_64 (Gentoo’s original kernel). The ISO file is of 3450 MB. Despite this exGENT version 230109 runs surprisingly fast from DVD or a USB stick. Even in VirtualBox and VMware. Faster than most other Linux live systems I would say. I call my new version exGENT 2023 LXQt Live DVD/USB. It replaces version 210122. All installed packages in exGENT have been updated to the latest available version by 230109 using Gentoo’s repos. Study the full package list.

NEWS 210122 about exGENT (Gentoo) 64 bit
I’ve made a new version of exGENT with only a few necessary packages pre-installed. It uses LXQt 0.15.1 as Desktop environment and kernel 5.10.8-gentoo-aufs-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s latest stable kernel 5.10.8. The ISO file is of 2220 MB. Despite this exGENT version 210120 runs surprisingly fast from DVD or USB. Even in VirtualBox and VMware. Faster than most other Linux live systems. I call my new version exGENT 2021 LXQt Live DVD/USB. It replaces version 200428. All installed packages in exGENT have been updated to the latest available version by 210122. Study the full package list.

What’s new in kernel 5.10 LTS? – The most exciting kernel in years!

Is exGENT Build 210122 unique?
If you have a look at Gentoo’s download site you will notice that the latest Gentoo live system is from 20160704 (!?). Furthermore there are only a few other distros based on Gentoo. The most well-known are Funtoo Linux and Sabayon Linux. Funtoo isn’t a live system. Sabayon is a live system distributed with different Desktops variants. (Not with LXQt though). I have tried some of them on the computers I have access to. None of Sabayon’s variants could run live. Not even in VirtualBox and VMware. My guess is that exGENT has better hardware recognition than Sabayon.

Who is exGENT/Gentoo for?
Experienced Linux users or those who really want to learn Linux. (Perhaps also for people who are bored with mainstream distributions like Ubuntu).

I’ve made a new version of exGENT with only a few necessary packages pre-installed. It uses LXQt 0.14.1 as Desktop environment and kernel 5.6.7-gentoo-aufs-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s latest stable kernel 5.6.7. The ISO file is of 2100 MB. Despite this exGENT version 200428 runs surprisingly fast from DVD or USB. Even in VirtualBox and VMware. Faster than most other Linux live systems. I call my new version exGENT 2020 LXQt Live DVD/USB. It replaces version 200119. All installed packages in exGENT have been updated to the latest available version by 200428. Study the full package list.

What’s new in kernel 5.6? – The most exciting kernel in years!

What’s new in exGENT Build 200428?
The boot loader Grub Legacy has been replaced by Grub2. In exGENT versions before 170309 the file system wasn’t writable when running exGENT live (from DVD). Now you can emerge (install) new programs/packages even while running the system from a DVD or USB stick. If you do that and later decide to install exGENT to hard drive all your changes will follow! (That is if you use the install scripts in /root/install). Furthermore you can install/transfer exGENT to a USB stick with the dd command in Linux or use Rufus or Etcher in Windows. Such installations were impossible before. NOTE: I have not installed Google Chrome. It’s not needed anymore, since Netflix nowadays runs very well in Firefox. About the LXQt Desktop environment: LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel. MOST IMPORTANT: Now you can install exGENT to hard drive in two ways. You can still use the install scrips in /root/install. That is the best way to install exGENT on non UEFI computers for example VirtualBox and VMware. The second way is to use the Calamares Installer.
