DebEX Barebone with Xfce 4.12 and kernel 4.2.0-7-exton

debianRed-150x150About DebEX Barebone, DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE Linux 64 bit
All three systems/distributions are a based on Debian Jessie (Debian 8.1). There are also certain elements of Debian Sid (unstable). Xfce 4.12 (released 150228 after about three years work!) is used as Desktop environment in DebEX Barebone. It aims to be fast and low on system resources, while still being visually appealing and user friendly. Gnome 3.14 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE 4.14.3 and KDE Plasma Desktop 5:84 is used in DebEX KDE. DebEX Barebone uses “my” special kernel 4.2.0-7-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 4.2). DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE use “my” special kernel 4.1.0-3-exton equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 4.1.3. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

What’s new in kernel 4.2? One million new lines of code in kernel 4.2! (The biggest kernel release ever according to Linus Torvalds).

NEWS 150902 about DebEX Barebone (Xfce4)
A new version of DebEX Barebone with Xfce 4.12 and kernel 4.2.0-7-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 4.2) is ready. I have installed Nvidia’s proprietary graphic driver 352.41. Read below about how to use it. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of September 2, 2015. Announcement about Xfce 4.12, released 150228: Today, after 2 years and 10 months of work, we are pleased to announce the release of the Xfce desktop 4.12, a new stable version that supersedes Xfce 4.10. This long period can only be explained by how awesome Xfce 4.10 was. But as all things, it needed some refreshing – and for that we saw lots of new contributors providing valuable feedback, features and bugfixes. As always, Xfce follows its steady pace of evolution without revolution that seems to match our users’ needs.

Runs from RAM

DebEX Barebone can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run DebEX from RAM.

KERNELS
DebEX Barebone uses kernel 4.2.0-7-exton. DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE KDE use kernel 4.1.0-3-exton.

Rolling distributions
Debian Jessie/DebEX are rolling distributions, which implies that once you have installed the system on the hard drive there is no need for re-installations (which otherwise is common in the Linux world). This means, for example, that you can go on and install Gnome 3.14 or/and KDE 4.14.3 in DebEX Barebone/KDE. I.e. the latest versions (as of 150831) of Gnome and KDE.

ExTiX 15.3 with LXQt 0.9.0 and kernel 4.1.0-3-exton

extix-logo-black-white-bgI have made a new version of ExTiXThe Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 15.3 LXQt Live DVD. (The previous version was 15.2).

ABOUT
ExTiX 15.3
LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian 8.1 Jessie/Ubuntu 15.04. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Unity (Ubuntu). After removing Unity I have installed LXQt 0.9.0. LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment. ExTiX LXQt is now more stable than ever. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version by 150808.

The system language is ENGLISH.

Used KERNEL
My special kernel 4.1.0-3-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s kernel 4.1.3.

What’s new in kernel 4.1? (Linux 4.1 is a major update to the Linux kernel)

Nvidia Graphics driver
I have also installed Nvidia Graphics driver 352.30 in the LXQt version (150808). It has support for the following GPUs: Quadro K1200, Quadro M6000, GeForce 920M, GeForce 930A, GeForce 930M, GeForce 940M, GeForce GTX 950M, GeForce GTX 960M and GeForce GTX TITAN X. This driver will be used automatically if your card is supported. Note: One reason for me to abandon Gnome 3.14 (which was used in previous versions of ExTiX) is that Gnome 3.14 won’t run together with Nvidia’s proprietary drivers.

NOTE
There is also a KDE version of ExTiX from 150417.

DebEX Barebone 64 bit Live DVD with Xfce 4.12, released 150228 after three years of work

DebianNEWS about DebEX Barebone 150329
A new version of DebEX Barebone with Xfce 4.12 and kernel 3.18.0-8-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.18.1) is ready. I have installed Nvidia’s proprietary graphic driver 340.65. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of Mars 29, 2015.

Announcement about Xfce 4.12, released 150228
Today, after 2 years and 10 months of work, we are pleased to announce the release of the Xfce desktop 4.12, a new stable version that supersedes Xfce 4.10.

Unique?

As far as I know there is not other Linux live cd/dvd with Xfce 4.12.

Three versions of DebEX: DebEX Barebone, DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE Linux 64 bit
All three systems/distributions are based on Debian Jessie (upcoming Debian 8). DebEX Barebone uses “my” special kernel 3.18.0-8-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.18.1). So does DebEX Gnome version 150122. DebEX KDE uses “my” special kernel 3.19.0-5-exton equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.19.0. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

PuppEX Tahr (Tahrpup 6.0) with kernel 3.19.1-PAE-puppex

CruxNEWS 150309
A new version of PuppEX Tahr 32bit is ready. Kernel 3.19.1 is the latest available stable kernel from Kernel.org as of 150309. PuppEX uses the original Puppy Tahr Desktop. I have added PCManFM and LXTerminal. They are more useful than ROX-Filer respectively RXVT, I think. The ISO file is on the whole 475 MB, which is due to me including also NVIDIA Graphics driver 346.47, Gimp, Google Chrome (for Netflix), Adobe Flash and compiling tools. Tahrpup original is of only 199 MB. PuppEX is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems. (Puppy/PuppEX runs from RAM). I’ve also added Tahrpup’s Service Pack 6.0.2. With PAE compiled into the kernel PuppEX now can address up to 64GB of RAM.

Compatible with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
The beauty of Puppy Tahr 6.0 is that programs that are available for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS also can be easily installed and run in Puppy Tahr (and thus also in PuppEX).

Run the world’s most popular Linux system with the latest kernel – 3.19.0!

MeX LinuxNEWS/CHANGES in MeX Linux build 150214
All packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 150214. Cairo-Dock has been replaced by Docky. The most important change is that I have replaced the install program Ubiquity with MeX Installer. The installation to hard drive is now so simple that a 10 year old child can do it. Watch a SLIDESHOW of the hard drive installation process. Also: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca is based on Debian and Ubuntu 14.04. MeX build 150214 is based on Debian Jessie, Ubuntu 14.10 and Linux Mint 17.1. I have replaced kernel 3.16.0-28-generic with “my” special kernel 3.19.0-5-exton (corresponding Kernel.org’s kernel 3.19.0).

Program content
To make it possible to run MeX from RAM I have kept down the number of installed packages. The MeX ISO file is of 1260 MB. The ISO size has increased a bit because of me installing Google Chrome (to make it possible to watch Netflix movies). All packages have been updated to the latest available stable version as of February 14
, 2015. See a complete list of all installed packages.

Used KERNEL
The latest original Ubuntu kernel 3.16.0-28-generic (for live systems) corresponding Kernel.org’s kernel 3.16.4 has been replaced by “my” special kernel 3.19.0-5-exton (corresponding Kernel.org’s kernel 3.19.0). The best thing with kernel 3.19 is that it has better support for the open-source Nvidia driver Nouveau than any other older kernel.

Feature OVERVIEW for the Linux 3.19 kernel

Who can benefit from MeX?
All who like Debian/Ubuntu/Mint and want a system that is easy to use and maintain. Also those who want to run a Linux system superfast from RAM and/or like to run Linux from a USB flash drive. And those who want the latest stable kernel – 3.19.0.
