ExLight 64bit UEFI, Build 231005, based on Debian “Sid/Trixie” (unstable/testing) with Enlightenment 0.25.4 (latest) as DE, Refracta Snapshot and Calamares Installer

NEWS 231005 ABOUT ExLight
I’ve made a new version of ExLight with the Enlightenment 0.25.4 Desktop environment, Refracta Snapshot (create your own Debian Sid/Trixie System) and Calamares 3.3.0~alpha2-1 Installer Framework.

New sources 231005
This new version of ExLight is based on Debian Sid / Trixie (unstable/testing). Build 231005 is a total rebuild of ExLight. The ISO file size is of only 2000 MB, which means that you’ll need about 3GB RAM to run ExLight even faster from RAM. I.e. load to RAM – screenshot. You can remove the DVD or USB stick when ExLight has booted.

KERNEL
ExLight Build 231005 uses kernel 6.5.3-amd64-exton built from Debian kernel sources with Debian patches.

What’s new in kernel 6.5?

Installed packages
Study all installed packages in ExLight Build 231005.

THE REAL McCoy

ExLight is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian Sid. So is ExLight.

DebEX KDE Plasma, Build 230330, based on Debian 12 Sid/Bookworm with kernel 6.1.12-exton and Refracta Snapshot

NEWS 230330 about DebEX KDE Plasma – a Refracta Build
I have made a new version of DebEX KDE Plasma Live DVD – uefi. It’s a pure Debian 12 (Sid/upcoming Bookworm) system. Still supposed to be unstable, but the “full hard freeze” took place already 230312. And I haven’t discovered any “bugs”… There are no Ubuntu or Kubuntu elements involved in DebEX. DebEX KDE Plasma Sid uses the KDE Plasma Desktop 5.27.2 – latest version, released 230228 – as Desktop environment. Kernel 6.1.12-exton is used. Compiled with all Debian patches. All included packages have been updated to the latest version as of 230330. In Build 230330 I have added LURE (Linux User REpository). LURE is intended to bring the AUR to all distros. It is currently in an alpha state and may not be stable. It can download a repository, build packages in it using a bash script similar to PKGBUILD, and then install them using your system package manager. Read about how to use LURE…

VirtualBox Guest Additions and VMware Tools are pre-installed, which mean that you can run DebEX KDE in full screen – see the screenshots below.

THE REAL McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian and (mostly) of Debian Sid/unstable. So is DebEX KDE.

SCREENSHOTS
1. Using LURE to install Thunar
2. The Desktop for the ordinary user user
3. The Desktop for root
4. Running in full screen in VirtualBox
5. Running in full screen in VMware

ExLight 64bit UEFI, Build 221130, based on Debian “Sid” (unstable/development) with Enlightenment 0.25.4 (latest) as DE, Refracta Snapshot and Calamares Installer

NEWS 221130 ABOUT ExLight
I’ve made a new version of ExLight with the Enlightenment 0.25.4 Desktop environment, Refracta Snapshot (create your own Debian Sid System) and Calamares 3.2.61-1 Installer Framework. The very nice Enlightenment theme e25 Neonz is used.

New sources 221130
This new version of ExLight is based on Debian Sid (unstable/development). Build 221130 is a total rebuild of ExLight. The ISO file size is of only 1850 MB, which means that you’ll need about 3GB RAM to run ExLight even faster from RAM. I.e. load to RAM – screenshot. You can remove the DVD or USB stick when ExLight has booted.

KERNEL
ExLight Build 221130 uses kernel 6.0.10-amd64-exton-rt14 built from Debian kernel sources with Debian patches.

What’s new in kernel 6.0?

Installed packages
Study all installed packages in ExLight Build 221130.

THE REAL McCoy
ExLight is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian Sid. So is ExLight.

KNOWN ISSUE
You can’t login to the Enlightenment 0.25.4 Desktop unless you use a “fairly new” computer. Not older that about eight (8) years according to my experience. Read more about the problem…

ExTiX 22.8 – “The Ultimate Linux System” – based on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS with LXQt 0.17, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.19.0-amd64-exton :: Build 220814

ExTiX 22.8 LXQt – Build 220814
I have made a new version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 22.8 LXQt Live DVD. (The previous LXQt version was 21.11 from 211030). ExTiX 22.8 is based on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)! Ubuntu 22.04 will be supported until 2027. The best thing with ExTiX 22.8 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! One other very good thing with this version of ExTiX is that it is quite light. The ISO file is of only 1820 MB, which means that you can run the system super fast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 3 or Advanced options… >> load to RAM.

ABOUT
ExTiX 22.8
LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Gnome. After removing Gnome I have installed LXQt 0.17. LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment. NOTE: This ExTiX LXQt Build is for installation to UEFI-enabled computers. You shall use Refracta Installer for that.

The system language is ENGLISH.

SCREENSHOTS

2. ExTiX LXQt – live’s Desktop
3. WiFi connection
4. ExTiX 22.8 running in full screen in VirtualBox

ExLight 64bit UEFI, Build 220726, based on Debian “Sid” (unstable/development) with Enlightenment 0.25.3 (latest) as DE, Refracta Snapshot and Calamares Installer

NEWS 220726 ABOUT ExLight
I’ve made a new version of ExLight with the Enlightenment 0.25.3 Desktop environment, Refracta Snapshot (create your own Debian Sid System) and Calamares 3.2.60-1 Installer Framework. The very nice Enlightenment theme e25 Neonz is used.

KERNEL
ExLight Build 220726 uses Debian’s original kernel 5.18.0-2-amd64.

VirtualBox and VMware
ExLight Build 220726 runs very well in VirtualBox and VMware. Maybe you’ll have to use boot alternative 4 (failsafe). You can use Calamares Installer also in VirtualBox and VMware without any problems.VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch a screenshot when ExLight is running in full screen in VirtualBox.

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40), Kodi 19.4 and kernel 5.18.3-amd64-exton :: Build 220617

NEWS/CHANGES 220617
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Matrix 19.4 – latest version. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. It is designed around a “10-foot user interface” for use with televisions and remote controls. Kodi runs very well in MeX. On a web site called FireStickTricks you can find instructions how to install 27 (?!) extra Kodi Builds with their own repositories and skins. The article is called Best Kodi Builds December 2022. I’ve tried Grindhouse today. Works very well. Otherwise MeX version 220617 works in the same way as previous versions.

NEWS/CHANGES 220617
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 220617 is based only on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.15) with “my” special kernel 5.18.3-amd64-exton. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 220617. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 40. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed in MeX Build 220617) to create your own installable Ubuntu Live DVD once you have installed MeX to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Ubuntu 22.04 LTS live system. When you start Refracta Snapshot it will look like this. You don’t even have to install MeX to hard drive before you can use the Refracta Snapshot. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Ubuntu system while running MeX from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO) will only take 10 – 30 min!

DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment – Build 211215 – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40, Enlightenment 0.24.2, penguins-eggs (remaster tool) and kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21

About DebEX Barebone Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment, DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE Plasma Linux 64 bit
All three systems/distributions are based on Debian. Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40 and Enlightenment 0.24.2 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment Build 211215. Gnome 3.38 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE Plasma Desktop 5:20 is used in DebEX KDE. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

NEWS 211215 about DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment – a penguins-eggs Build
A new version of DebEX – based on Debian Sid (unstable) – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40, Enlightenment 0.24.2 and kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21 is ready. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of December 15, 2021.

Most important Changes
When you start up DebEX Build 211215 live (from a DVD or a USB stick) you will end up logged in as the ordinary user user to the Budgie Desktop. The password for user is live. You can log out from Budgie and log in again to Gnome or Enlightenment. You can also log in from LightDM as root (super admin). The password for root is root. NOTE: You can’t log in to the Enlightenment Desktop when running DebEX Build 211215 in VirtualBox or VMware. You can use the Calamares 3.2.48-1 Installer Framework to install DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment to your computer in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. Watch this animated GIF. My other DebEX builds were created with Refracta Snapshot. This DebEX Build (211215) is, however, created with a remaster tool called penguins-eggs. Very easy to handle. Penguins-eggs is a console utility, in active development, who let you to remaster your system and redistribute it as iso images or from the lan via PXE remote boot. You can use penguins-eggs in any Debian/Ubuntu system installed to hard drive. Basically you only need to start up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c. Then just follow the instructions – see the screenshots below. If you haven’t installed Calamares you will be asked to do so. Do that even if you already have Calamares installed. A system/ISO built with penguins-eggs must use a special Calamares version to be installable. Penguins-eggs is developed by Piero Proietti. It is based on Remastersys, Refracta, Systemback and father Knoppix.

How-to use penguins-eggs
1. Install DebEX (or any other Debian/Ubuntu based system) to hard drive
2. Change everything to your liking
3. Open up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c
Screenshot 1NOTE: If you choose fast your new ISO will be ready in about five minutes (even in VirtualBox). If you choose max it will take about two hours (in VirtualBox), but the ISO will be about 500 MB smaller. (As regards new builds of DebEX Build 211215). A smaller ISO has one disadvantage. It doesn’t boot as fast as the one built using the option fast.

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian “Sid” and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40) and kernel 5.15.5-exton :: Build 211207

NEWS/CHANGES 211207
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 211207 is based only on Debian Sid and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.13) with “my” special kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 211207. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 40. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

MORE MeX NEWS 211207
1. The MeX ISO is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive.
2. Another big improvement is that MeX now can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can eject the disc (DVD)/USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run MeX that way. The ISO file is of only 1400 MB so MeX will run super fast from RAM!
3. I have replaced Google Chrome with Firefox. Google Chrome is no longer needed to be able to run Netflix in Linux.
4. The best thing with this new MeX build – Create your own installable Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Live DVD with Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed)! The whole “remaster process” is so simple that a 10 year old child can do it.
5. I have installed Calamares Installer as in many of my other Linux builds. Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Very easy to use. You can use Calamares to install MeX on both UEFI computers and non UEFI computers (for example VirtualBox and VMware).
6. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed so you can run MeX in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot.

Who can benefit from MeX?
All who like Debian/Ubuntu and want a system that is easy to use and maintain. And of course those who want to create their own Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system in a very simple way with Refracta Snapshot. Regarding MeX also those who want to run a Linux system super fast from RAM and/or like to run Linux from a USB flash drive. And those who want a new kernel – 5.15.5 and be among the very first people to have Ubuntu 22.04 LTS stable installed in April 2022.

NEWS 210125 ABOUT ExLight
I’ve made a new version of ExLight with the Enlightenment 0.24.2 Desktop environment, Refracta Snapshot (create your own Debian Bullseye System), Nvidia Graphics Driver 455.45.01 and Calamares 3.2.35-1 Installer Framework. The very nice Enlightenment theme R-Matrix-2.0 is used. It will be used also after a hard drive installation.

New sources 210125
This new version of ExLight is based on Debian testing 11 Bullseye. Build 210125 is a total rebuild of ExLight. The ISO file size is of only 1440 MB, which means that ExLight now can run even faster from RAM. I.e. load to RAM – screenshot. DebEX Gnome – 64 bit – for UEFI computers with Gnome Desktop 3.34, Calamares Installer, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.4.4-exton – Build 191220

About all DebEX systems
All four DebEX systems/distributions are a based on Debian Buster (10) and
Debian Bullseye/Sid (upcoming Debian 11). Budgie Desktop 10.5 and Enlightenment 0.23.1 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Barebone/Budgie/Enlightenment. Gnome 3.34 is used in DebEX GnomeKDE Plasma Desktop 5:14 is used in DebEX KDE. LXQt is used in DebEX Build 19120932 bit. The system language is English (in all four versions of DebEX).

NEWS 191220 about DebEX Gnome
I had to replace yesterdays version of DebEX Gnome with version 191220. VirtualBox Guest Utils couldn’t be installed in yesterdays version. Something was wrong with the kernel configuration. I therefore had to compile a new kernel (5.4.4 – latest!) today. Now everything works also in VirtualBox. Another good thing with version 191220 of DebEX Gnome is that it can be installed without problems in VirtualBox. I.e. you don’t have to chroot into the install partition and install Grub – screenshot.

NEWS 191219 about DebEX Gnome – a Refracta UEFI Build
I have made a new extra version of DebEX, which I call DebEX Gnome Live DVD. It’s a pure Debian system using the testing (bullseye) and unstable (sid) repositories. Gnome 3.34 (latest) is used as Desktop environment. I have removed the Mate Desktop, since Gnome now can be used on all kind of computers. Also when running DebEX in VirtualBox and VMware. No need for Nvidia’s proprietary graphics drivers when running this new version of DebEX. You can of course install such drivers if you want to.Furthermore I have replaced Google Chrome with Iceweasel. It is now possible to watch Netflix movies using Iceweasel (Firefox) in Linux. I have also replaced Refracta Installer with Calamares Installer, which makes it possible to install DebEX Gnome in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. All installed packages have been updated to the latest version as of 191219.  DebEX Gnome uses kernel 5.4.3-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s second latest kernel 5.4.3.

SCREENSHOTS
