How To dual boot, triple boot or multiboot Linux with Windows in a simple way and be happy

In this instruction I will show you how easy it is to have several Linux systems installed on one computer together with for example Windows 10. The configuration is so simple a ten year old child can do it.

BACKGROUND
Ubuntu and all Linux systems based on Ubuntu (such as Linux Mint) uses Grub2 as boot manager. Also Debian and most other Linux systems use Grub2. Grub2 works differently from the old Grub Legacy.

UEFI BIOS and non-UEFI BIOS
The Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) or its version 2.x variant, Unified EFI (UEFI) is a firmware type that is widespread on recent computers, especially those more recent than 2010Ubuntu wiki.

Configuring Grub2 – Example for non-UEFI BIOS computers
One of my computers, an Acer Aspire 5750G from 2010, has a 750 GB hard drive and an external USB hard drive of 1000 GB. On that computer I have Windows 10 and twelve (12) different Linux systems installed. Of those twelve systems three are Android-x86 systems (AndEX Nougat and AndEX Marshmallow).  Below I will describe step by step how I configured Grub2 in the easiest way possible.

1. The computer was delivered with Windows 7 (now updated to Windows 10) preinstalled on /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda3. I immediately started up my computer from a Linux Mint Live DVD. Using GParted, I created seven new partitions on the internal hard drive and three on the external USB hard drive. After that I installed Mint on /dev/sda7 and Grub2 on /dev/sda (MBR) at the same time as the installer also suggested. Then I restarted my computer and checked that Mint (and Windows) could be started. Everything worked (as expected) fine. See screenshots below showing how my partitioning looks like now.

2. Then it was time to install Arch Linux on /dev/sda8. When the installation prompted installation of Grub2 during installation, I chose to install Grub2 on /dev/sda8. Such an installation of Grub2 does not affect the existing Grub2 installation in MBR. I did it just the same to find out “start data” for Arch Linux. I then read these start data from Mint in the /mnt/sda8/boot/grub/grub.cfg file.

3. After that I started Mint on /dev/sda7 again. Now it was time to get a real “multiboot computer” using Grub2. This is how I did it:
A) In /etc/grub.d I deleted all files except 00_header, 05_debian_theme, 06_mint_theme, 40_custom and README. Said folder then looked like this.



B)
I edited the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file to look like this. Note that this is how my 40_custom file looks like now when I have installed totally twelve Linux systems. What I should write about the start of Arch Linux (see above) was already fixed by looking at the /mnt/sda8/boot/grub/grub.cfg file. I could do it in a similar way when I installed the other eleven Linux systems.

C) Finally, I ran the update-grub command. Then the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file (which is the file Grub2 “takes into account” at boot) was created/changed. This file (grub.cfg) should never be edited manually. Instead, edit the file 40_custom, as I showed above. Always use Leafpad or Mousepad (or a similar simple editor) when editing 40_custom. Never Libre Office Writer or Word or the like of them. Study my present grub.cfg file. When I now start up my Acer Aspire the boot screen look like this.

Configuring Grub2 – Example for UEFI BIOS computers
On another computer (laptop) Lenovo Z50 from 2015 I have Windows 10 installed together with three Linux systems. Ubuntu 17.04 and two Android-x86 systems. Since Windows 10 was installed in UEFI mode I also had to install Ubuntu 17.04 in UEFI mode to be able to configure Grub2 the way I describe above. I went into BIOS and changed the settings to look like this.

When I went into the boot menu in BIOS I could choose my USB stick. In this case Kingston DataTraveler – watch this screenshot.

So I started up Ubuntu 17.04 from the USB stick and installed it on a partition I had created in advance using GParted.  Since my Lenovo already had a ESP (EFI System Partition) I installed Grub2 onto that partition. When I now start up my Lenovo the boot screen looks like this. (You can of course install many more Linux systems if you like. Just edit /etc/grub.d/40_custom the way I describe above).

IMPORTANT: Identifying if the computer boots the Ubuntu DVD/USB stick in UEFI mode
If the BIOS is set up to boot the DVD/USB stick in UEFI mode, then you will see the screen below.

If the BIOS is NOT set up to boot the CD in UEFI mode, or if the disk is not 64-bit, then you will see the screen below.

Grub2 bootsplash
One of the benefits of Grub2 is that you can have a nice high resolution image as bootsplash/grub boot image. The image may have the same size as the resolution on your screen can handle, for example 1366×768. It is common with a regular image in jpg, png or tga format. Just place the image in /boot/grub and run the update-grub command. If you get the answer that the image is found in /boot/grub it will work. If not, try editing the /etc /default/grub file and add the line
GRUB_BACKGROUND = “/boot/grub/MyNicePicture.png”
Then run the update-grub command again (and restart the computer).

Have a look at my /etc/default/grub file.

Change the text – font and size – which Grub2 shows at boot

Run the following command:
grub-mkfont –output=/boot/grub/DejaVuSansMono.pf2 –size=24 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSansMono.ttf
(Maybe you’ll need to run the command (apt-get install ttf-dejavu first). Then edit the /etc/default/grub file and add the following line.
GRUB_FONT=/boot/grub/DejaVuSansMono.pf2
Run the update-grub command again. After rebooting, the Grub2 boot menu will surely look better (depending on how your boot image looks like).

NEWS 170426 about AndEX Nougat 7.1.1 – April 2017 builds
I’ve added a new ISO – android-x86_64-7.1.1-nougat-kernel-4.4.62-exton-vmware-1050mb-170426.iso – which can run very well live in VMware Workstation 12.5.5. You can of course also install the system in VMware. Kernel 4.4.62 is used. GAPPS and all other apps mentioned on the INFO site are installed. NOTE: You can run AndEX Nougat Build 170426 also on newer laptops and Desktop computers. Sound won’t work on all though. The video performance is generally very good.

NEWS 170423: AndEX – Nougat 7.1.1 with kernel 4.11-rc7-exton-android-x86_64 respectively kernel 4.10-11-exton-android-x86_64 and GAPPS
My new builds of Android-x86_64 Nougat 7.1.1 have GAPPS pre-installed. I.e. Google Play Services, Google Play Store 7.6.08.N-all, Gmail and YouTube 12.09.58. Also many other apps. For example: Spotify 8.4.0.539, Clash of Clans 8.709.23, File Manager 2.0.0.355, Google Earth, Google Maps 9.48.2, SnapTube 4.3.0, Firefox 53.0 and Google Chrome 58.0. The two systems are called android_x86_64-7.1.1-nougat-gapps-kernel-4.11.rc7-exton-1160mb-170423 respectively android_x86_64-7.1.1-nougat-gapps-kernel-4.10.11-exton-1160mb-170422.

PREREQUISITE
Both systems have to be installed manually to hard drive. To be able to do that you must have at least one Linux system installed on your hard drive. You must also use Grub as bootloader.

ABOUT Andex Nougat 7.1.1

My compiled Android-x86_64 systems (Nougat 7.1.1) can run from hard drive on certain computers. They must be installed to hard drive and run from there. The systems can be installed on almost all newer laptops (and some Desktop computers). For example Acer (Aspire), HP, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Thinkpad, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Asus laptops. I can also mention that I could run my new Nougat versions without problems on a HP Pavilion 500-317no Desktop Computer. The Android-AndEX systems are distributed in the form of a Zip files. I.e. not as ISO files as the rest of my Linux distributions. You must do a manual installation to hard drive. That can even be done to a drive where you already have another Linux system (for example Ubuntu 17.04) installed. That’s sort of a Frugal Installation (normally used by Puppy Linux).

Android Nougat 7.1.1 was released 170106.

KERNELS
AndEX Nougat Build 170423 uses kernel 4.11-rc7. (Latest kernel by 170423). AndEX Nougat Build 170422 uses kernel 4.10.11. (The second latest stable kernel by 170423).

KNOWN ISSUES

1. You can’t run AndEX Nougat 7.1.1 Build 170423/170422 in VirtualBox and VMware. Note that my other two Android Nougat systems from 170201 respectively 161107 can run in VirtualBox and VMware.
2. Bluetooth won’t work.

My new build of Android-x86_64 Nougat 7.1.1 has GAPPS pre-installed. I.e. Google Play Services 3.9.08, Google Play Store 7.4.12.L-all, Gmail 7.1.1 and YouTube 12.01.55. Also many other apps. For example: Spotify 7.5.0.1076, Clash of Clans 8.709.16, File Manager 2.0.0.355, Google Earth 8.0.5.2351, SnapTube 4.3.0.8333, Firefox 50.1.0, Google Chrome 55.0.2883.91 and Aptoide App Store 8.1.0.2. Bigger screen and better sound etc. Also: In AndEX Nougat Build 170201 almost all apps and games can be installed via Google Play Store. You can even install very big games (of 1GB or so), but unfortunately almost all such games need a touchscreen. Still not convinced? NOTE1/WARNING1
You must use a fairly new/modern computer. Android-x86_64 Nougat won’t run (even start) on older computers. My other Android remaster KitKat 4.4.4 Build 160214 will run also on older computers.

NOTE2/WARNING2
Before you buy and download this version of AndEX Nougat you must be aware of that not all apps downloaded from Google Play Store can run in an Android-x86_64 system. Some very big (around 1GB) games for example won’t run. On the other hand I could run Pes Club Manager, which is of 866 MB and Traffic Rider of about the same size. You must also be aware of that some (many) games need a touchscreen.

KNOWN ISSUES
1. You can run AndEX Nougat 7.1.1 in VirtualBox and VMware, but sound won’t work. I have therefore kept my previous Build AndEX Nougat 7.0 161107 since you can run Build 161107 in VirtualBox or VMware with sound working.
2. Bluetooth won’t work.

AndEX Marshmallow 6.0.1 – 64bit – with GAPPS and kernel-4.4.20-exton-android-x86_64 – Build 160922

My build of Android-x86_64 Marshmallow 6.0.1 has GAPPS pre-installed. I.e. Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Gmail and more apps. Other pre-installed apps are for example Aptoide App Manager and Clash of Clans. The ISO is called android_x86_64-marshmallow-6.0.1-gapps-736mb-160922.iso. AndEX Marshmallow 64bit Build 160922 is totally error-free (as far as I know). Everything just works! About Google Play Services – read below and see this slideshow.

More about AndEX Marshmallow 64 bit
Marshmallow 6.0.1 is the second latest version of the Android mobile operating system developed by Google. I call my remaster of it AndEX Marshmallow 64bit Live DVD. It uses “my” special kernel 4.4.20-exton-android-x86_64 with some extra features. I.e. extra drivers. My Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 build from 2016-02-14 will also cost you 9 $. I has one advantage over the Nougat, Marshmallow and Lollipop AndEX versions: The system can be used also on older laptops. Read more about the KitKat 4.4.4 version 160214 or DOWNLOAD it instantly.

Google Play Services
When you start up AndEX Marshmallow Build 160922 for the first time you will get an error message saying that “Google Play Services has stopped”. (As in my previous builds of AndEX). This is easily fixed by going to Settings – Apps – Google Play Services. Give Google Play Services ALL permissions. After  that you won’t see any more error messages.

Installing new apps in AndEX Marshmallow 64 bit
Use Google Play Store or Aptoide App Manager, which are pre-installed. Just make your choices! See screenshots when I’m installing Spotify, Google Chrome and YouTube while running AndEX Marshmallow Build 160922 from hard drive.

REPLACEMENT
Version 160922 (64 bit) replaces version 160220 of AndEX Marshmallow (32 bit).

AndEX (Android-x86) 5.1.1 Lollipop with GAPPS and kernel 4.4.0 – Build 160215

My new build of Android-x86 Lollipop 5.1.1 has GAPPS pre-installed. I.e. Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Maps, YouTube and more apps. The ISO is called android-x86-lollipop-5.1.1-exton-kernel4.4-mesa-507mb-160215.iso. AndEX 160215 is totally error-free. For installing new apps you shall always use Google Play Store in AndEX Build 160215. Only use Aptoide App Manager (which is also pre-installed) if you can’t find the app you are searching for in Google Play Store.

Used kernel

4.4.0-exton-android-x86. The original Android-x86 Lollipop version uses kernel 4.0.9.

About AndEX

Upgrade/Updates
This build of AndEX (160215) replaces Build 151010. No need to upgrade if you already have a working version of Build 151010 installed. All installed apps (GAPPS and others) will then be in the same version as in build 160215 of AndEX. I.e. if you install Andriod-x86 to hard drive or to a USB stick with persistence all installed apps will be automatically updated/upgraded via Google Play Store. The system will check for updates all the time or after a reboot. It works in the same way as on your Android phone. If, however, you need or want this new version (with a newer kernel) you can contact me so I can send you a download link. Please then show your receipt for AndEX Lollipop Build 151010 or 150916.

Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Build 9 with GAPPS, kernel 4.4.0-exton-android-x86, Bluetooth (working!) and Mesa 10.5.9

I’ve added Mesa (3D Graphics Library) 10.5.9 for better Graphic performance. The system can run live (from CD or a USB stick) on almost all laptops (and some Desktop computers). For example Acer (Aspire), HP, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Thinkpad, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Ausus laptops. I can also mention that I could run this version without problems on a HP Pavilion 500 Desktop Computer. The Android system is distributed in the form of an ISO file as the rest of my Linux distributions. I.e. you must (as usual) burn the ISO file to a CD if you want to run the system live on your computer or install it to hard drive. Read about how to burn ISO files. Or skip that. Just use ImgBurn. Nothing can go wrong. You can easily install the system to your hard drive and install new apps. You can also install new apps while running the system live. Google Play Store  and Aptoide App Manager are pre-installed so you can just make your choices…

Used kernel
4.4.0-exton-android-x86. The original Android-x86 KitKat version uses kernel 4.0.9.

Replacement
This version (version 9) replaces all my previous (8) Android-x86 4.4.4 KitKat builds. In version 9 (as in version 8) I’ve added GAPPS. I.e. Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Maps, YouTube and more apps. Everything just works.

Updates

If you install Andriod-x86 to your hard drive or to a USB stick with persistence installed apps will be automatically updated/upgraded via Google Play Store. The system will check for updates all the time or after a reboot. It works in the same way as on your Android phone.

ATI Radeon compatibility
I can mention that this KitKat Build 9 works on my old Acer Aspire 5102WLMi AMD with ATI Radeon Xpress 1100. Many 3D games run just fine.

Need to upgrade?
Well, if you have installed any of my previous KitKat versions with GAPPS to your hard drive and the system is working alright you don’t “have to” upgrade. That’s because (as I say above) all included GAPPS will be upgraded automatically (just like your Android phone). Otherwise you can contact me so I can send you the new download link. Then please show your previous receipt.

Some interesting comments on my site about AndEX :: my Android-x86 builds

Android-Logo-215x382Since I only have six computers myself I was looking forward to hear from other testers about their experiences.

In connection with that I’d like to share with you some comments on my main Android-x86 site ANDEX.EXTON.NET.

One member had this question:

I would like to try AndEx on an old laptop, but since payment is required, I would like to know if this (Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow) run on an Intel Pentium-M processor without SSE3? In case this cannot be run on that platform, what do you recommend?

Another very positive/enthusiastic member (not me!) answered:

I simply bought all three versions to test with. All three work fine on most PCs/laptops, especially as long as the PC/laptop has an integrated/onboard graphics chip (like accellerated intel chipsets 3000, 5000, 6000 etc., and even older ones). If you have discrete graphics cards you may have some issues or it may even not work properly at all. If you really are reluctant to buy these very advanced versions you could try some of the free less capable Android-x86 versions first and only then buy the ANDEX versions (after testing your hardware with Android-x86).

After that the very same member gave this general comment on andex.exton.net about Andex Marshmallow 6.0.1:

This version works fine the newer hardware I tested it on. For older hardware I personally would recommend the Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Build 8 with GAPPS, kernel 4.0.9-exton-android-x86, Bluetooth (working!) and Mesa Exton Version. I have all 3 versions (Android 4/5 and 6) running great on several test systems and at least according to my testing, especially Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 works really great (and fast, graphics accellerated) on more systems than e.g. this latest version. Version 4.4.4 works on older and common Dell and Packard Bell PC’s. FWIW: I got the latest version 6.0.1 running 100% fine on a Dell Optiplex 7010 PC. That Dell has an onboard intel graphics chip. But is really not an old PC.

And he went on saying:

BTW: Easiest way AFAIK to test these releases is to simply plug an USB 2.0/3.0 stick with the (previously on another PC) Android-x86 installed version on into any PC. That way I just, in addition, installed and tested this latest Android-x86 ANDEX kernel 4.4 (Marshmallow 6.0.1) on additional Dell hardware and am pleased to report it works great, at least on the systems I tested it on, all with integrated/on-board graphics though. E.g. my Dell E6320 (a 4+ year old core i5 4GB RAM laptop) gained a new lease of life with a the blazing fast ANDEX 6.0.1 Android version on it!

My comment:

Your comments are so positive/enthusiastic that I like to use them to promote my Android-x86 builds.

He answered me:

But these comments are realistic, and were not really intended to be positive. I had no problems with any of your versions except for to be expected incompatibility with (especially) older systems and the latest Android-x86 builds. BTW: The only PC I did get lots of “Android App” errors on this could still be solved by disabling the discrete Nvidia graphics card and use the onboard graphics chips instead (solving the graphic driver/chip problems). That, of course, is not always the best option and that’s why that that one PC I installed the “Nox” version 3.1.0 Android Emulator for Windows. But make no mistake; native Android(-x86) like these AndEX versions are the only way (that I know of) to get optimum Android performance.

NEWS  – AndEX – Marshmallow 6.0.1 with kernel 4.4.0-exton and GAPPS
My build of Android-x86 Marshmallow 6.0.1 has GAPPS pre-installed. I.e. Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Gmail, YouTube and more apps. For example: Aptoide, Google Chrome and Spotify. The ISO is called android-x86-6.0.1-marshmallow-kernel-4.4.0-exton-GAPPS-530mb-160220.iso. AndEX Marshmallow Build 160220 is totally error-free (as far as I know).

My compiled Android-x86 system (Marshmallow 6.0.1) can run live (from CD) or be installed on almost all laptops (and some Desktop computers). For example Acer (Aspire), HP, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, Thinkpad, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Ausus laptops. The Android system is distributed in the form of an ISO file as the rest of my Linux distributions. I.e. you must (as usual) burn the ISO file to a CD if you want to run the system live on your computer or install it to hard drive. Read about how to burn ISO files. Or skip that. Just use ImgBurn. Nothing can go wrong.

Marshmallow 6.0.1 is the latest version of the Android mobile operating system developed by Google. I call my remaster of it AndEX Marshmallow Live CD. It uses “my” special kernel 4.4.0-exton-android-x86 with some extra features. I.e. extra drivers. My Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 build from 2016-01-25 will also cost you 9 $. It has two advantages over the Marshmallow version: The system can be used also on older laptops and it runs very well in VirtualBox. Installing new apps in AndEX Marshmallow
Use Google Play Store or Aptoide Apps Store, which are pre-installed. Just make your choices…

What’s the point?
Well, if you like your Android phone and all the apps you have installed on it I’m sure you will also like to run apps from your laptop. Bigger screen and better sound etc. Also: In AndEX Marshmallow Build 160220 almost all apps and games can be installed via Google Play Store. Still not convinced?
